The Glass Plain

Humanity stands at the beginning of its first great age beyond Earth. The stars that belong for thousands of years to dreamers, poets, and astronomers are now places that ships can reach. Yet the achievement remains new. Earth is still the cradle of the human race, not merely one home among many. No child has yet been born beneath an alien sun, and no permanent human settlement endures beyond the solar system. Twelve ships carry the first serious hope of changing that.

For more than twenty years, the Deep Survey Program has kept a dozen vessels moving through the Milky Way. They search for worlds where human beings might breathe the air, walk beneath an open sky, and build the first distant branches of civilization. They also search for unfamiliar forms of life and for evidence that another intelligent species may have looked outward from its own world before humanity learned to do the same. Against the immensity of the galaxy, twelve ships are almost nothing. On Earth, however, their names are spoken with the reverence once reserved for the wooden vessels that crossed unknown oceans.

The program is operated jointly by the civilian Interstellar Exploration Authority and United Earth Space Command. Space Command provides the ships, crews, navigators, engineers, and military protection. The Authority chooses the scientific objectives and supplies the researchers who evaluate each world. Scientists want time, access, and the freedom to follow discoveries wherever they lead. Military officers must consider contamination, hostile life, unknown weapons, and technologies capable of threatening Earth. The partnership is not always comfortable, but it endures because neither side can carry humanity to the stars alone.

A standard deployment lasts twenty-four months. During that time, a survey ship travels through an assigned region of the galaxy, investigating promising systems and dispatching reports through unmanned courier probes. Distance makes close supervision from Earth impossible. The men and women aboard these vessels make decisions on their own, often knowing that months will pass before anyone at home learns what they have found. They are explorers, scientists, soldiers, and, in the most hopeful sense of the word, pathfinders. They are searching for the places where generations not yet born may someday live.

The Odyssey is a little more than fourteen months into its current deployment. It has investigated eleven worlds. Five are barren, three support only microbial life, and two possess complex ecosystems built on chemistry poisonous to human beings. The eleventh offers liquid water, tolerable gravity, and breathable air, but no evidence that anything more intelligent than a grazing animal has ever lived there. The discoveries are scientifically valuable, but none can support the dream that launched the Survey. None can become humanity’s first home beneath another sun.

The twelfth planet first appears on the long-range instruments as another possibility rather than a revelation. It circles an unremarkable star and possesses open water, extensive vegetation, moderate gravity, and an oxygen-rich atmosphere. No transmissions or artificial satellites answer the Odyssey’s signals, but the planet is too promising to pass by. Admiral Nathan Calder orders the ship into orbit, and Director Rachel Holloway begins the work of determining whether this distant world might become the first foothold in humanity’s long journey across the galaxy.

The observation deck of the Odyssey gave Rachel Holloway an unobstructed view of a world that should have told her nothing was left to find. The planet turned beneath the ship in slow silence, its northern continent streaked with black glass that caught the light of a distant sun and threw it back in long, flat gleams. From four hundred kilometers up, the fused plains looked almost beautiful, like frozen rivers of obsidian cutting across green and brown terrain. Rachel had seen enough war zones and impact sites in her career to know better than to trust that kind of beauty.

She studied the topographical overlay projected across the viewport, watching the sensor data resolve the glass fields into precise geometric shapes. Circles, mostly, hundreds of kilometers wide, their edges too clean to be anything but deliberate. Weapons had done this. Not asteroids, not volcanism. Someone had aimed something enormous at their own cities and fired.

“Confirmed impact signatures on three more sites,” said the sensor technician at the console behind her. “All consistent with directed energy discharge. No radiological signature, which rules out fission or fusion weapons.”

“So they had something else,” Rachel said.

“Something we don’t have a name for yet.”

She turned from the viewport study and crossed the deck to where Samuel Kincaid stood hunched over a portable resonance display, his thick fingers tracing patterns across the screen. His beard was flecked with the same gray that had crept into his hairline over the past decade, and his eyes had the patient, unhurried focus of a man who had spent his career reading catastrophe out of rock.

“Tell me I’m wrong about what I’m seeing,” Rachel said.

Kincaid didn’t look up right away. “Wish I could. Surface glass runs eleven meters deep in some places. That kind of vitrification doesn’t happen from a natural strike. You need sustained, focused energy delivery, probably measured in the terajoule range, over a target that didn’t move.” He straightened and rubbed at his lower back. “Whoever did this wasn’t trying to conquer anybody. They were trying to make sure nothing came back.”

“And yet something did,” Rachel said, and gestured toward the deeper readout scrolling on the main display.

Two kilometers below the crust, beneath the largest of the vitrified basins, the ship’s instruments had detected power pulses of staggering magnitude, rhythmic and precise, repeating at intervals that suggested design rather than accident. The energy signature had first appeared as a rounding error in the survey data, something the analysts had almost dismissed. It had taken three full orbital passes before anyone believed the numbers.

“Four hundred thousand years, minimum, since anything walked on that surface,” Kincaid said. “And something down there is still drawing more power than our entire ship generates in a week.”

“Which means it isn’t a ruin,” Rachel said. “It’s a system. Something is still running it.”

She had commanded enough survey missions to know the difference between excitement and alarm, and she felt both now in equal measure. She also knew what came next. Within an hour of the readings being confirmed, her comm panel had chimed with a priority channel request from the admiral’s deck.

Admiral Nathan Calder’s voice filled her quarters before his image resolved on the display, deep and unhurried, the voice of a man accustomed to being obeyed without repeating himself. “Director Holloway. I assume you’ve seen the subsurface readings.”

“I have.”

“Then you understand what Earth is going to want to know first.”

“Earth is going to want to know what killed an entire civilization,” Rachel said. “I intend to find that out.”

“Earth is going to want to know what kind of technology can generate that much power from two kilometers underground without a visible reactor housing,” Calder said. “You have a mandate to conduct scientific survey. I have a mandate to secure any propulsion or energy technology that could benefit Earth’s strategic position. Those mandates are not in conflict as long as your team remembers whose ship they’re standing on.”

Rachel had worked with enough admirals to recognize the particular cadence of a man reciting a directive he had already decided not to negotiate. “I’ll keep you informed, Admiral.”

“See that you do.” The channel closed.

She assembled her landing party within the hour. Dr. Elias Rourke arrived first, spectacles already smudged with fingerprints, a data pad clutched against his chest like something fragile he was protecting from the cold. Major Tomas Vale came next, his tactical gear fitted and checked with the economy of a man who did not enjoy surprises. Kincaid brought his seismic resonance kit slung over one shoulder, unbothered, as though he were heading out to survey a quarry rather than the grave of a vanished world.

“Before we go down,” Rachel told Vale, as the shuttle prepped for descent, “I want it understood that this is a survey operation. Sidearms stay holstered unless there is a direct threat to personnel. No breaching charges, no defensive perimeter unless I authorize it.”

Vale’s jaw tightened, but his voice stayed level. “Director, we don’t know what’s down there.”

“That’s exactly why we don’t start by pointing weapons at it.”

“If that power source is defended—” “If it’s defended, we’ll know soon enough, and I’ll change the order,” Rachel said. “Until then, we observe. We document. We don’t give whatever built this a reason to think we came as an invading force.”

Vale held her gaze a moment longer, then nodded once, the kind of nod that meant compliance without agreement. Rachel had learned to accept that from him. It was, in its own way, a form of trust.

The shuttle set down on the edge of the vitrified plain, its landing struts settling onto glass that had not felt weather in longer than humanity had existed as a species. Outside the viewport, the wasteland stretched to the horizon in sheets of black, broken here and there by the shattered remnants of walls that might once have stood a hundred stories tall. Wind moved dust across the glass in slow, silent drifts. Nothing else moved at all.

Kincaid was the first through the airlock, kneeling almost immediately to press a resonance probe against the fused surface. He worked in silence for several minutes while Rourke wandered a short distance away, running gloved fingers along the edge of a collapsed archway, murmuring something to himself that Rachel didn’t catch.

“Got something,” Kincaid finally said. “Big void about two hundred meters that way, running deep. Walls too regular to be natural. And there’s a resonance pattern underneath it, rhythmic, like a heartbeat. Matches the power signature from orbit.”

They found the plaza a quarter hour later, a vast circular depression half buried under drifted ash, its far edge marked by a structure that might once have been a monument before the war took its top half away. At its center, a slab of dark material, untouched by the glass that surrounded it, sat flush with the ground like a lid.

“Transit shaft,” Kincaid said, studying his readout. “Or an elevator housing, maybe both. It goes down at least two kilometers, matches the depth of our power source almost exactly.”

Rachel crouched at the edge of the slab, running her palm just above its surface without touching it. It was cool, seamless, without a visible mechanism of any kind.

“How do we open it?” Vale asked.

Nobody answered him, because nobody had to.

The slab split down an invisible seam and withdrew into the ground with a low, even hum, revealing a descending passage lined in dark, polished material. As the landing party stood frozen at its edge, lights ignited within the shaft, one section at a time, spreading downward into the dark like something waking up in stages, aware of exactly how far it needed to reach.

“Nobody touched anything,” Rourke said quietly.

“No,” Rachel said. “Nobody did.”

Vale’s hand had drifted, almost involuntarily, toward the sidearm at his hip. Rachel caught the motion and held his eyes until his hand dropped away again.

They descended in silence, the passage widening as it went, its walls untouched by dust or corrosion despite the age the readings implied. At the bottom, a transport car waited on a single rail, its doors already open, its interior lit by the same patient glow as the shaft above it. Rachel stepped inside first, and the others followed, and the doors closed behind them without a hand ever touching the controls.

The car began to move before anyone gave it an order, accelerating smoothly into the dark beyond the transparent walls, carrying them deeper into the planet than any human being had ever gone.
