They are officially off the books. Unofficially, they are all each other has. Recruited by the enigmatic Director, an elite strike team operates from a covert, state-of-the-art compound hidden within a tranquil Cotswold estate. Between deniable extractions and counterterrorism missions that no government can acknowledge, they are a found family — lethal, loyal, and utterly deniable. At its heart are Lana Winters, call sign Blondie, a fearless former SAS breach specialist, and Kira Jackson, call sign Viper, a cool-headed, deadly sniper. Razor-sharp banter and bruising sparring sessions in the dojo mask a fierce, slow-burn attraction neither dares to name. Watched over from the control centre by cyber-analyst Suzanne Kemp and led in the field by Jax Walters, every operation demands absolute trust. But when the next mission pushes them to the brink, Lana and Kira must decide if the greatest risk is not the firefight — it is letting each other in. Off the Record is an adrenaline-fuelled spy thriller where explosive action meets an unforgettable, slow-burn romance.

Steel and Powder

The government had officially written off every single person living inside the estate, declaring them dead, disgraced, or scrubbed clean from official registers to ensure they no longer existed on paper. Deep beneath the sprawling limestone facades of an isolated Cotswold manor, the Director had constructed a ghost installation, creating an off-the-books strike command built for operations that diplomatic channels refused to touch. The compound stretched across subterranean levels, fitted with biometric security, custom armouries, state-of-the-art surveillance suites, and a fully equipped combat dojo. It was a haven for forgotten elite operatives, providing a rare chance to execute violent justice without the suffocating red tape of political bureaucracy.

Inside the dojo, the air smelled heavily of sweat, dense rubber mats, and gun oil, filled with the sharp sound of bare feet gripping the floor. Former SAS breach specialist Lana Winters, known across the unit as Blondie, shifted her weight low, keeping her five-foot-two frame balanced as she circled her opponent. Her sharp blue eyes tracked every twitch of muscle in Kira Jackson’s shoulders. Known as Viper, the former military sniper towered over her, unleashing a rapid jab-cross combination that forced Lana back, her dark hair pulled into a tight braid that whipped with every fluid pivot of her long limbs.

Kira feinted left, driving a lightning-fast jab toward Lana’s chin, but Lana slipped under the strike, digging a heavy hook straight into Kira’s ribs. The sniper gasped, stepping back with a wicked, predatory grin spreading across her face.

"That all you’ve got, Blondie?" Kira teased, her voice raspy, dripping with raw challenge. "My grandmother hits harder than that, and she’s been buried in Yorkshire for six years."

"Keep talking, Viper," Lana snapped, darting forward, her voice edged with razor-sharp heat. "I’m just waiting for you to leave that thick neck open so I can choke you out properly."

"You wish you could get your hands around my neck," Kira retorted, throwing a sweeping leg kick that Lana barely blocked with her forearm, the force sending a dull ache straight down her bone. "You’ve been staring at my arse all morning, Winters. If you want a closer look, you only have to ask nicely."

"Your arse is the only target big enough for even a sniper to hit," Lana shot back, closing the distance instantly. She grabbed Kira’s lapel, twisting her hips to execute a brutal hip throw that slammed the larger woman onto the mat with a resonant, air-shattering thud.

Lana pinned Kira down immediately, straddling her waist, trapping her wrists against the padded floor while breathing heavily, her tight blonde undercut damp with sweat. Her blue eyes held Kira’s, neither woman moving, the sound of their heavy breathing filling the small space between their faces as a pulse ticked hard in Kira’s throat.

Up in the high-tech control centre, Suzanne Kemp watched the live telemetry streams on her vast wall of monitors, sipping cold coffee while tracking the two women’s heart rates spike into red zones. "Vitals are rising, ladies," Watcher’s dry, crisp voice crackled through the overhead speakers, cutting through the heavy atmosphere in the dojo. "Unless you’re planning to kill each other before lunch, I suggest you wrap up the foreplay. The Director’s pulse monitor indicates he’s active on the satellite line."

Kira chuckled, bucking her hips up playfully to force Lana off balance. "Hear that, Blondie? Watcher thinks we’re flirting."

"She’s delusional," Lana muttered, releasing Kira’s wrists, standing up smoothly, offering a hand to pull her sparring partner off the floor. "And you’re slow today, Jackson."

"I’ll show you slow next time we’re on the range," Kira replied, wiping her sweaty forehead with the back of her forearm, giving Lana a lingering, appreciative glance as they grabbed their towels.

Leaving the dojo, the pair walked down the reinforced concrete corridor toward the compound armoury, their combat boots thudding in unison against the steel grating floor. Inside the vault-like room, surrounded by rows of stripped rifles, custom suppressors, and racks of high-grade explosives, Ian Kincaid was hard at work. Stocky, grey-bearded, and wearing a heavy leather apron, Spark was fine-tuning the bolt assembly of a custom suppressed carbine, his grey jaw set in focused concentration.

"You two sound like a pair of alley cats out there," Spark grunted without looking up from his workbench, placing the pristine rifle part down carefully. "You’re going to wreck my rubber mats before the week is out."

"Blondie was just aggressive because she missed me," Kira said, leaning casually against the heavy workbench, picking up a dummy round, tossing it into the air. "She likes it rough, don’t you, breach?"

"Touch my gear with those filthy hands, Viper, and I’ll feed you a box of nine-millimetre hollow points," Spark growled, though his brown eyes held a familiar, protective warmth. He reached beneath the desk, pulling out a freshly modified short-barrel carbine, pushing it across the counter toward Lana. "Here, Blondie. Tailored the gas block for faster cycling during close-quarters breaches, just like you wanted."

Lana took the weapon, inspecting the balance with precise, practised movements, sliding the bolt back to check the action. "Perfect work, Spark. At least someone in this compound knows how to satisfy a woman."

Kira scoffed loudly, stepping closer to Lana, leaning down so her lips nearly brushed the shell of Lana’s ear. "That hurt my feelings, Blondie. I satisfy you every time I cover your back from five hundred yards out."

Lana turned her head slowly, her cheek almost touching Kira’s nose, feeling the warm, steady heat radiating off the sniper’s skin. "That’s over-watch, Jackson. Not a date."

Before Kira could offer another filthy retort, heavy footsteps echoed outside the armoury doorway. Team leader Jax Walters stepped inside, his broad six-foot-two frame filling the doorway, his steel-blue eyes sweeping over the pair with a calm, measured authority.

"Save the sweet talk for the mess hall, people," Jax said quietly, his low British tone immediately settling the room into professional focus. "Briefing room, right now. The Director has pushed down our updated training schedules, and we need to review the tactical parameters."

Lana racked the bolt of her carbine, placing it securely back into her designated locker, following Jax down the hallway alongside Kira and Spark. They entered the secure briefing room, a climate-controlled chamber dominated by a massive glass intelligence table displaying glowing tactical maps, encrypted file directories, and live satellite feeds.

Suzanne Kemp was already seated at the main console, her headset hanging round her neck, dark hair pinned in her usual messy bun. Beside her stood Jack Taylor, his broad shoulders crossed, cold blue eyes scanning the data streams projected across the central wall screen.

"Nice of you all to join us," Suzanne said, tapping a quick sequence into her keyboard, projecting clear diagrams of upcoming live-fire exercises across the glass table. "Jack and I have been going over the updated drill rotations. The Director wants us running night-time infiltration drills in the woods along the perimeter starting tomorrow at zero-four-hundred."

"Fabulous," Kira sighed, dropping into a leather chair, throwing her legs up onto the edge of the glass table until Jax pointedly glared at her, forcing her to lower her boots back to the floor. "More running through wet Cotswold mud in the dark."

"It builds character, Viper," Jack noted smoothly, his voice calm, laced with dry humour. "Or in your case, maybe it just builds patience."

"I have plenty of patience," Kira shot back, flashing a sharp grin at Lana. "I’ve been waiting for Blondie to buy me a drink for three months."

"I’d rather drink battery acid," Lana replied automatically, settling into her chair, her blue eyes fixing on the tactical display while her shoulder remained brushed firmly against Kira’s arm, neither woman pulling away from the touch.

Early Morning Training

The forest along the outer edge of the Cotswold estate was thick with pine, cold mist clinging to the ground like a shroud as zero-four-hundred approached. Lana adjusted the strap of her short-barrel carbine, the weapon resting across her chest while her gloved thumb hovered near the safety switch. Beside her, crouched low in the dense brush, Kira
