First Day

Kali Mercer stepped through the glass doors of Mercer Designs Headquarters and felt the cool air hit her face. The lobby stretched wide with white marble floors and tall windows that let the morning light pour in. She smoothed down the front of her simple black dress and took a slow breath. Today was her first official day as an intern, and she wanted every second of it to count.

Her parents waited near the reception desk. Dante Mercer looked sharp in his dark suit, the same way he always did when the cameras were around. Kassandra stood beside him in a tailored cream blazer and matching slacks, her smile warm but professional.

"There she is," Dante said, pulling her into a quick hug. "Ready to earn your place, sweetheart?"

"I am," Kali said. "No shortcuts. I mean it."

Kassandra squeezed her hand. "We know. That's why we're starting you at the bottom of every department. You'll see how the whole house runs before you touch a single sketch of your own."

They led her past the front desk and into the elevator. The doors slid shut and the car rose smoothly. Kali watched the numbers climb and tried to calm the flutter in her stomach. She had walked these halls as a kid, but never like this. Never as someone who had to prove she belonged.

The first stop was the fabric floor. Bolts of silk, wool, and lace lined the walls in neat rows. Designers moved between tables with swatches in their hands, calling out measurements and notes. Dante introduced her to the head of textiles, a thin woman named Elaine who shook Kali's hand firmly and talked about dye lots like they were personal friends. Kali squeezed back just as firmly, her eyes locked on Elaine as she nodded along, quickly pulling her notebook from her bag to jot down a few quick details about the sustainable dye sourcing. She wanted them to see she cared about the work, not just the name on the building.

Next came the pattern room. Long tables held half-built jackets and skirts pinned to forms. The air smelled like chalk and steam. Her mother explained how every piece started here before it ever reached a runway. Kali ran her fingers lightly over a piece of muslin and felt the familiar pull of wanting to create something new.

They moved through marketing, then sales, then the sample closet that looked more like a small museum. Everywhere they went, people smiled and welcomed her. Some already knew her face from holiday parties. Others just saw another intern until Dante said her last name. Kali cringed at that part a little. She wanted the respect to come later, after she had earned it.

By late morning they reached the shoe studio on the third floor. The space was brighter than the others, with long workbenches covered in wooden lasts, leather scraps, and half-finished heels. Music played low from a speaker in the corner. A tall man with light brown hair looked up from a pair of black pumps he was adjusting. He set the shoe down and walked over with an easy grin.

"You must be the new blood," he said, holding out his hand. "Desmond Wright. Everyone calls me Des. I handle the footwear around here."

Kali shook his hand. His grip was warm and confident. "Kali Mercer. Nice to meet you."

"Mercer, huh? So the rumors are true. The heir is starting from the ground up." He laughed, not unkindly. "I like that. Shows guts. Most people in your spot would skip straight to the penthouse office."

She felt her cheeks warm. "I don't want anyone saying I coasted. If I'm going to run this place someday, I need to know every corner of it."

"Smart girl." Des leaned against the edge of the table and crossed his arms. "You ever design a shoe before?"

"Only in my sketchbooks. Nothing that walked a real runway."

"Well, stick around and I'll show you how the real ones get made. These babies have to hold up under lights and long nights. Pretty doesn't mean much if the heel snaps." He picked up the black pump again and turned it so she could see the sole. "See that arch support? That's the difference between a model smiling and a model limping."

Kali smiled. He talked fast and kept eye contact the whole time. There was something magnetic about the way he moved, casually twirling a silver leather punch around his finger with practiced ease, like the room belonged to him. Her father chuckled beside her.

"Des is our resident charmer," Dante said. "Best shoe man we've had in years. Don't let him talk you into staying down here forever, though. We need you upstairs eventually."

"No promises," Des said with a wink. "I might steal her for the footwear team. We've got a new line coming that could use fresh eyes."

Kassandra checked her watch. "We'll let you get back to it, Des. Kali still has half the building left."

"Don't be a stranger," Des called after them. "Lunch is on me sometime. I know the good spots."

Kali glanced back once as they left. He was already bent over the shoe again, but he looked up and gave her another quick smile. She turned away and followed her parents down the hall, her pulse a little faster than before.

The next stop was the main studio floor where the collections came together. Rails of garments lined the walls. Assistants pushed rolling racks past open sewing stations. In the center of the room a small group stood around a platform while a photographer adjusted lights. A man stood under the softboxes in a dark charcoal suit that fit him like it had been cut for his body alone. He was tall, broad through the shoulders, with dark brown hair that fell past them. When he turned to speak to the stylist, Kali caught the clean line of his jaw and the calm set of his mouth.

Her mother touched her elbow. "That's Joseph Ryerson. Joe. He's been with us for three seasons now. One of the top male faces in the industry."

Dante raised a hand. "Joe. Come meet our newest intern."

Joe stepped off the platform and walked over. Up close he was even more striking. Olive skin, steady brown eyes, and a quiet presence that filled the space without trying. He offered his hand.

"Welcome," he said. His voice was low and even. "Joseph Ryerson. Everyone just calls me Joe."

Kali took his hand. It was warm and rough at the edges, nothing like the polished grip Des had given her. "Kali Mercer. First day."

"First days are the longest," he said. A small smile pulled at one corner of his mouth. "You'll get the hang of it. This place looks bigger than it is once you learn the shortcuts."

"I'll take any shortcuts that don't involve elevators," she said, trying to match his easy tone.

He laughed once, soft. "Fair enough. Good luck today."

He nodded to her parents and headed back to the platform. Kali watched him go for a second longer than she meant to. He moved like someone who knew exactly where he stood and didn't need to prove it. Handsome didn't even cover it. He was the kind of man who ended up on billboards in other countries. She figured he was miles out of her league and probably already had half the city after him.

Her father cleared his throat. "Ready for the design archives? That's where the real history lives."

"Lead the way," Kali said.

They spent another hour moving through the remaining floors. Kali met the accounting team, the event planners, and the young assistants who ran coffee and fabric samples between buildings. Everywhere she went she paid attention. She asked about timelines and budgets and what kept people up at night before a show. By the time they circled back to the main lobby her feet ached, but her mind was full.

Kassandra stopped near the front doors and faced her. "That's the tour. Tomorrow you start in the sample room at eight. Elaine already knows you're coming. Listen more than you talk for the first week. People notice."

"I will," Kali said. "Thank you. Both of you. For not just handing me a title."

Dante put a hand on her shoulder. "You never asked for one. That matters. Go home and rest. Big week ahead."

They hugged her goodbye and headed toward the executive elevators. Kali stood alone for a moment in the middle of the lobby and looked around. The marble gleamed. The logo above the desk caught the light. Somewhere upstairs Des was probably still talking someone's ear off about leather quality. Somewhere on the studio floor Joe was finishing his shots without making a sound about it.

She pushed through the doors and stepped back onto the sidewalk. The city noise rushed in around her. Kali adjusted the strap of her bag and started walking. First day done. Tomorrow she would show up early, keep her head down, and start proving she belonged here for real. The rest could wait.

Dinner Invitation

Kali burst through the apartment door like the whole city was chasing her. Her bag hit the floor with a thud and she kicked off her heels without even looking where they landed. "Max! You will not believe this day!" Max Stevens stuck his head out of the kitchen, a dish towel slung over one shoulder and green eyes already smiling. He had been choppi
