The War Between Flesh and Spirit
Foundational Scripture
Galatians 5:17 (KJV)
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
1. The Reality of the Inner Conflict
Every believer quickly discovers something they were not fully prepared for—the struggle did not end at salvation. In fact, in many ways, it became more noticeable.
Before Christ, there was no real internal resistance. A person simply followed their nature. But after salvation, something changes. A new nature is introduced, and now there is a conflict where there was once agreement.
This is the war between the flesh and the Spirit.
The apostle Paul makes it clear: these two are contrary to one another. They do not cooperate. They do not compromise. They oppose each other continually.
This means the tension you feel is not a sign that something is wrong—it is evidence that something is alive in you.
2. What Is the Flesh?
The flesh is not merely the physical body. It is the old nature—the mindset, desires, and tendencies that operate independently of God.
The flesh says:
“Do what feels right.”
“Protect yourself at all costs.”
“Respond based on emotion.”
“Seek satisfaction now.”
The flesh is self-driven, self-centered, and resistant to God’s authority.
It can appear sinful, but it can also appear religious.
The flesh can:
Perform outward acts of righteousness while lacking inward surrender
Seek recognition for spiritual activity
Operate in pride, comparison, and control
This is why the flesh is dangerous—it is not always obvious.
3. What Is the Spirit?
The Spirit represents the new life given through Christ. It is God’s presence within the believer, guiding, correcting, and empowering.
The Spirit leads toward:
Truth over emotion
Obedience over impulse
Peace over chaos
Surrender over control
Where the flesh pulls you toward self, the Spirit draws you toward God.
The Spirit does not force—it leads.
And that leadership requires your cooperation.
4. Why the Conflict Exists
This conflict exists because two natures cannot rule at the same time.
The flesh desires control.
The Spirit establishes surrender.
The flesh reacts.
The Spirit responds.
The flesh seeks comfort.
The Spirit produces growth.
So when you feel torn between what you want to do and what you know you should do, you are experiencing this very conflict Paul described.
This is not weakness—it is awareness.
5. The Danger of Misunderstanding the Battle
Many believers misinterpret this struggle.
Some think:
“If I were truly spiritual, I wouldn’t struggle like this.”
“Something must be wrong with me.”
But the absence of conflict is not maturity—it is often surrender to the flesh.
A person fully led by the flesh feels little resistance.
A person walking in the Spirit becomes increasingly aware of what opposes God.
The goal is not to eliminate the awareness of the conflict, but to learn how to walk in victory through it.
6. The Key: Walking, Not Trying
Galatians 5:16 gives the answer:
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Notice the instruction is not:
Fight harder
Try more
Struggle better
It is simply this: walk
Walking implies:
Consistency
Direction
Relationship
Victory is not found in striving—it is found in staying in step with the Spirit.
The more you walk in the Spirit, the less power the flesh has to dominate your life.
7. This Is the Beginning of Freedom
Understanding this battle changes everything.
You stop being confused by your struggle.
You stop condemning yourself for the tension.
You begin to recognize what is happening within you.
And once you recognize it—you can respond differently.
You are not called to be controlled by the flesh.
You are called to walk in the Spirit.
Key Thought
The struggle within you is not a sign of failure—it is evidence that the Spirit of God is working in you.
Identifying the Works of the Flesh
Foundational Scripture Galatians 5:19–21 (KJV)“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like…” 1. The Flesh Reveals Itself Paul says the works…
