The Orphans

As I wake up I can hear my sister, Sasha, humming. As I open my eyes, there she is sitting at her vanity brushing her honey blonde hair. I will admit Sasha is the most beautiful 17 year old girl. She could be a supermodel, and she knew it, which gave her an air of confidence. Even though we are twins we are not identical. Sasha definitely got all the gorgeous genes. I am just a plain girl, nothing to look at and no one to notice, the perfect Omega.

In a gruff groggy voice I say, "You sure are in a good mood."

She smiled at me while looking in the mirror, "I just found out that the Alpha's twin sons, the Alpha heirs, are having a birthday party next month. The entire pack is invited including us. I want to make an impression. This is the first time we have been invited to the pack house." She was beaming with excitement.

That was true, being orphans we don't usually get invited to the Pack House for anything unless it is a major event.

"So, we are going dress shopping today!" Sasha squealed in delight.

I groaned, I rolled over onto my back and placed my arm over my eyes. Shopping with Sasha is horrible and boring. Trying to be interested in every dress she tries on is exhausting.

"Yep," she smacked her lips after applying lipstick. "So get up and get ready. We need to eat breakfast before we head out." She got up grabbed her little knock off designer bag and looked back at me with a smile on her face. "It's going to be a long day." Then she practically skipped out of the room. I groaned again. I just lied there trying to pep myself up for the long horrible day ahead of me. Once I succeeded enough to pull myself out of my bed, I put on the most comfortable clothes I could find, a pair of blue jeans and a simple tee shirt. I put on my tennis shoes knowing that a lot of walking is in my future. I ran a comb through my Auburn hair. My hair is the only thing I like about my looks. It looks like glowing embers in the sunlight. I put it in a side braid, then I grabbed my small book bag that I use for my daily items, and I head out to face this day.

Down in the kitchen Mother Teressa stood at the stove flipping pancakes while Father Ben set out plates. The smell of syrup and coffee filled the warm room. The younger orphans already chattering at the long table.

"Morning, girls," Mother Teressa said with her gentle smile. "Sasha looks ready to conquer the world this morning, and looks amazing doing it." She complimented Sasha.

"We are going dress shopping for the Alpha heirs' party," Sasha announced as I walked into the room. "The whole pack is invited. Even us." I smaller children cheered at the news. This would be the first time they were at the Pack House. The Pack Orphanage takes care of all the children's needs under it's care so their is no need to use the Communal Facilities at the Pack House.

Father Ben raised his eyebrows but kept his voice kind. "That is big news. Enjoy your day!" He said with his famous grin.

"Yes, Father Ben," I said reluctantly. Then I turned to my pancakes knowing I will need the energy. Sasha barely touched her food. She was already planning outfits in her head. Sasha was not your typical blonde air head, she was smart. She graduated early and has a full time job as a secretary at a large law firm outside of the pack. I still have three months to go of my senior year.

We stepped out into the crisp Rocky Mountain morning air. The sidewalks were busy with pack members heading to work. We got into Sasha's little red sports car. It is her pride and joy. She worked really hard for it.

The dress boutique smelled of perfume and new fabric. Soft lights glowed over racks of colorful gowns. Sasha dove straight for the red section. She pulled out three short dresses with deep necklines and sparkly straps. I found a velvet bench near the fitting rooms, opened my book, and tried to disappear.

Sasha came out of the dressing room in the first red mini. It clung to every curve. "Well?" she demanded, moving in a small circle to show me every inch of dress.

"It looks great," I said, eyes still on the page. She tried the second and third. Each one was flashier than the last. I gave the same half-hearted compliments while she posed in the three-way mirror. The salesgirl fussed around her trying her best to make a good commission.

Then Sasha spotted a simple emerald gown hanging alone. Full length, sweetheart neckline, soft fabric that would brush the floor. She yanked it off the rack and shoved it at me. "Your turn. I will not have you embarrass me in front of my future in laws." I rolled my eyes at her.

I protested, but she herded me into a stall. The dress slid over my head with a whisper. When I stepped out Sasha stared. The salesgirl actually gasped.

"Oh my," the girl said. "That color was made for your eyes. And your hair against the green... the color against your dark complexion... you look pretty." The sales girl said while examining me.

I looked in the mirror. The gown turned my skin warm and my eyes bright. For a second I did not recognize the girl staring back. My braid rested against the soft neckline. I felt strange, almost pretty. My heart did a small flip. In my heart it said, "This is the dress." Just then I knew I had to have it.

Sasha laughed it off. "Cute enough for an Omega, I guess." She turned back to the red dresses. "I'm taking this one." Sasha held out the flashiest of the mini red dresses. "You can put that green thing back. We do not have money to waste on dresses we will never wear again. We are just Omegas, remember?"

She paid for her red mini and a pair of heels while I changed. The emerald gown hung on a hook with its price tag still attached. The number made my stomach drop. I touched the soft fabric one last time before I left it behind. In my heart, I yearned for that dress.

On the drive home Sasha chattered about how the red dress would make every unmated male stare. I sat in the passenger seat not really listening, the memory of the green dress still vivid in my mind. My fingers curled around the empty space where that price tag had dangled. Tips from Maggie's Place. Every single one. I would save them all. I would buy that emerald gown myself. For the first time the party did not feel like something I just had to survive. It felt like something I might actually want to walk into looking like the girl I saw in that mirror.

The Alpha Heirs

Jason's POVThe sound of a man grunting through a set of push-ups is not what anyone wants to hear before the sun clears the ridge line, but that has been my life for ten years. I roll over and bury my face in the pillow, hoping the noise will get bored and go away. It never does. "All right, Jason, I know you're awake. Come on, get up. It's time fo
