The Rainbow Surprise
The sun was high in the sky and the sand was very warm under the girls' feet. Ava Sunshine stood on the edge of the water where the ocean met the land. She was eight years old and felt very responsible today. Her little sister, Averi, was only five years old. Averi was busy digging a hole in the sand to find buried treasure. She had bright blue eyes that always looked for magic in the world. Their dog, Bjorn, was a silver Norwegian Elkhound with a thick coat. He was a very brave dog and he loved to protect his sisters. Bjorn trotted back and forth along the shoreline. He sniffed the salty air and wagged his curled tail. It was a perfect day for playing at Sunny Beach. The water was a beautiful shade of blue that matched the clear sky above them.
Ava watched the waves roll in and out. She liked to think about what was on the other side of the big ocean. She was an adventurous girl who loved mysterious places. "Look at the water, Averi," Ava said with a smile. Averi looked up from her hole in the sand. She wiped a bit of dirt off her nose and squinted at the bright horizon. The sisters loved the beach more than any other place. It was their favorite spot to run and play. Bjorn let out a happy bark as he chased a small crab toward a tide pool. Everything was peaceful and happy. The sisters felt safe because they had each other and their loyal dog to watch over them. They did not know that a big surprise was swimming toward them right at that moment.
Suddenly, Ava saw something strange in the distance. There were splashes in the water that did not look like regular waves. Two shapes were moving quickly toward the shore. They were moving in a graceful way, dipping in and out of the blue water. As the shapes got closer, the colors began to change. They were not gray like the dolphins Ava had seen in books. These dolphins were special. They had skin that shimmered with every color of the rainbow. There was bright pink, deep purple, sunny yellow, and ocean blue. The colors swirled together like paint on a canvas. Ava gasped and pointed toward the waves. "Averi, look! Do you see them?" she asked. Her voice was full of wonder and excitement.
Averi stood up and her sneakers lit up with bright flashes of light. "Rainbow fish!" Averi shouted. She clapped her hands together. The two dolphins swam right up to the shallow water where the sand was wet. They did not act afraid of the humans or the dog. Instead, they made happy clicking sounds and whistled a friendly greeting. They bobbed their heads up and down as if they were saying hello to the sisters. Bjorn ran to the edge of the water and sniffed. He was a protective dog, but he did not growl. He could tell that these magical creatures were kind. He wagged his tail so hard that his whole body wiggled. The dolphins stayed very still in the water, waiting for the girls to come closer.
Ava felt very brave as she stepped into the cool water. The dolphins were the most beautiful things she had ever seen. One dolphin was mostly pink and blue, while the other had stripes of green and gold. They had friendly eyes that seemed to sparkle with intelligence. Ava knew this was the start of a big journey. She turned to her little sister and held out her hand. "They want us to go with them, Averi," Ava said. Averi did not hesitate because she trusted her big sister. She walked into the water until it reached her knees. Her pigtails bounced with every step she took. The rainbow dolphins leaned their smooth bodies against the girls, inviting them to climb on.
Ava helped Averi get onto the back of the pink and blue dolphin first. She made sure Averi was sitting comfortably behind the dorsal fin. "Hold on tight to the fin," Ava instructed. Averi grabbed the smooth fin with her small hands and giggled. Her light-up sneakers kicked the air in excitement. Then, Ava climbed onto the back of the green and gold dolphin. The skin of the dolphins felt cool and soft like silk. Ava felt a surge of bravery as she looked out at the vast ocean ahead of them. She knew they were leaving the safety of the beach, but she was not afraid. She was ready for an adventure. She looked over at Averi to make sure she was safe and happy.
Bjorn did not want to be left behind on the sand. He was part of the family and he always stayed close to the sisters. With a loud, happy bark, Bjorn jumped into the water. He was a very good swimmer and began to paddle his legs with great strength. The dolphins seemed to understand that the dog was coming too. They waited patiently for Bjorn to get into position beside them. The rainbow dolphins did not swim away fast at first. They stayed very still so the girls could find their balance. Ava held her sister’s hand tightly across the small space between the two dolphins. "Don't let go," Ava whispered. Averi nodded and gave a big, gap-toothed grin. "This is super-duper magic, Ava!" Averi cried out.
The dolphins began to glide slowly away from the shore. The movement was smooth and gentle, like a cradle rocking. Ava looked back at Sunny Beach. The umbrellas and the sand castles were getting smaller and smaller. The tall palm trees began to look like tiny feathers against the sky. The sisters were heading toward the horizon where the sky met the sea. Ava felt like a true explorer. She was eight years old and she was riding a rainbow dolphin across the ocean. She felt very proud to be leading this journey. The dolphins made more clicking sounds as they moved further into the deep water. They seemed to know exactly where they were going.
The water around them was crystal clear. Ava could see small fish swimming below the dolphins' bellies. The sun made the water sparkle like a thousand diamonds. Averi was singing a little song to her dolphin, and the dolphin seemed to whistle back in harmony. Bjorn swam steadily next to them, his head held high above the waves. He looked like a silver guardian watching over his pack. The air smelled of salt and fresh spray. Every time a small wave hit the dolphins, a mist of rainbow colors seemed to rise into the air. It was a sight that the sisters would never forget. They were far away from home now, but they felt a sense of peace and joy.
Ava looked at the big ocean and realized how large the world was. She felt a deep responsibility to keep Averi safe during their journey. She checked Averi's grip on the fin one more time. "Are you doing okay, little sister?" Ava asked loudly over the sound of the water. Averi laughed and kicked her legs. "I love the rainbow dolphins!" she shouted back. The dolphins began to pick up a little bit of speed, but they remained very steady. They were careful with their precious cargo. The journey was just beginning, and the sisters were ready for whatever mysteries lay ahead. They were two sisters, one brave dog, and two magical friends traveling toward a brand new world. The horizon was waiting for them, and they were ready to meet it together.
Riding the Waves
The rainbow dolphins moved fast across the salt water. Ava could feel the muscles of the great creature shifting beneath her as they sliced through the waves. The ocean was a vast blanket of blue, but the dolphins left a trail of shimmering colors behind them. The wind blew in the sisters' hair, tossing Ava’s locks and making Averi’s pigtails dance…
