A Strange Shadow on the Sand
The sun hung high in a sky of perfect robin-egg blue, casting a warm, golden glow over the familiar curves of Sunny Beach. Usually, the sand felt like powdered sugar between Ava’s toes, and the ocean was a brilliant turquoise that sparkled as if someone had scattered a thousand tiny mirrors across the waves. Today, however, something was wrong. Ava stood at the water’s edge, shielding her eyes with one hand while the other gripped a plastic yellow shovel. The waves were not dancing with their usual rhythmic cheer. Instead, the water looked heavy and tired, a dull shade of slate gray that reminded her of a rainy afternoon in the city.
“Ava, look! My castle is getting all crumbly,” Averi called out from a few yards away. The five-year-old was kneeling in the sand, her wavy brown hair blowing in the light breeze. She was trying to pat a tall tower into shape, but the sand was dry and wouldn't stick together. “The water isn't coming up to help me. It's staying way, way back there.”
Ava looked toward her younger sister and then back at the receding tide. Averi was right. The ocean seemed to be pulling away from the land, shrinking back into itself. It didn't have the bright, salty smell of the sea anymore. It smelled flat, like a puddle that had been sitting out for too long. Bjorn, their sturdy Norwegian Elkhound, sensed the change too. He stood near Ava, his silver-gray coat ruffing up around his neck. His dark eyes were fixed on the horizon, and his pointed ears twitched at every tiny sound. He wasn't barking, but his body was stiff and alert, the picture of a protector on duty.
“It’s okay, Averi,” Ava said, her voice steady and calm despite the flutter of worry in her chest. “Maybe the ocean is just taking a little nap. Why don't we go see if we can find some better sand near those rocks?”
George the monkey, who had been busy trying to balance a seashell on his head, let out a soft, inquisitive chirp. He hopped over to Ava’s side and pulled her hand. George was still getting used to life outside his old mountain cave, he brought Ava the shiny seashell, and he looked to Ava for clues on how to feel. Seeing her serious face, he let the seashell drop and climbed onto Bjorn’s back, burying his small, amber-furred hands into the dog’s thick coat. Bjorn gave a low, reassuring huff but didn't take his eyes off the water.
Averi stood up, wiping damp sand from her pink water shoes. She didn't look toward the rocks. Instead, she pointed a small finger toward the shoreline a few dozen yards down the beach. “Ava, look at the turtles. Why are they just sitting there? They look super-duper sad.”
Ava followed her sister’s gaze. A group of seven or eight sea turtles had washed up near the tide line. Usually, these were the Shimmering Turtles, famous for shells that glowed with a magical, iridescent light. When they swam, they looked like underwater rainbows. But as the girls approached, Ava saw that the magic had vanished. Their shells were matte and dark, looking like ordinary, cold stones. The turtles weren't moving. They were huddled together in a tight circle, their heads tucked partially into their shells.
“Oh, you poor things,” Averi whispered. She knelt beside the largest turtle and reached out a hand, gently stroking the top of its flipper. “Where did your sparkles go? You look all gray, just like the water.”
The turtle let out a soft, bubbly sigh but didn't pull away. It looked up at Averi with large, drooping eyes that seemed to be filled with tears. Ava felt a sharp pang of injustice. These turtles were part of the heartbeat of the beach. To see them so dim and lifeless felt like the world was losing its color. She looked at the other turtles and noticed they were all shivering, even though the sun was quite hot on their backs.
“Something is really wrong, Averi,” Ava said, her blue eyes narrowing with determination. “Their magic is gone. It’s like someone turned off a light-bulb under their shells.”
Suddenly, Bjorn let out a sharp, warning bark. He stepped in front of the sisters, his paws digging into the soft sand. Out in the water, the gray surface began to churn. It wasn't the spray of a wave or the splash of a fish. The water began to swirl in a massive, slow circle, creating a whirlpool that sucked in pieces of driftwood and kelp. Beneath the surface, a large shadow began to grow. It was enormous, stretching longer than a school bus. It wasn't the sleek shape of a shark or the bumpy back of a whale. It was a dark, shifting mass that felt heavy and cold, even from a distance.
“Hoppy! Hoppy, come quick!” Averi shouted, waving her arms. “Something big is coming!”
From the edge of the dunes, a small purple bunny came racing across the sand. Hoppy moved with incredible speed, his paws barely touching the ground. He skidded to a stop next to Ava, his long ears standing straight up. As he looked out at the churning water, the tips of his ears began to glow with a soft, golden light. It was a gentle pulse, like a heartbeat made of sunshine. The golden glow was a sure sign that magic was nearby—but this time, the magic felt frightened.
“Look, look, look!” Hoppy squeaked, his voice high and rapid. “The water is broken! It’s all gray and yucky! And that shadow—it’s big, big, big!”
The shadow moved closer to the shore, and for a moment, the girls held their breath. The wind, which had been whistling through the beach grass, suddenly died down. The world became eerily silent. Even the seagulls stopped crying and flew inland. The silence was so thick it made Ava’s ears ring. She reached out and took Averi’s hand, squeezing it tight.
Just as the dark shadow reached the shallow water, a streak of bright color broke through the gray surface. A rainbow dolphin leaped high into the air, its skin shimmering with every color of the spectrum. It was a beautiful sight, but the dolphin didn't look happy. It performed a frantic twist in mid-air and landed with a loud splash. It surfaced again almost immediately, bobbing its head and whistling a series of sharp, panicked notes.
George the monkey jumped down from Bjorn’s back and began to hop up and down on the sand. He mimicked the dolphin’s whistles, letting out a series of chirps and hoots that sounded like a desperate question. The dolphin responded by splashing its tail against the water, sending a spray of gray droplets toward the girls. It whistled again, louder this time, its eyes fixed on Ava with an urgent, pleading expression.
“It’s trying to tell us something,” Ava said, her heart pounding against her ribs. “It’s about the Shimmering City. I think the darkness in the water is coming from down there.”
Averi looked at the sad, dim turtles and then back at the frantic dolphin. “We have to help them, Ava. The ocean is crying. If the turtles don't get their glow back, they'll stay sad forever.”
The dolphin whistled one last time, a long, mournful sound that echoed across the silent beach. It felt like a call to action, a signal that their peaceful day in the sun was over and a new, mysterious journey was about to begin. Bjorn stood tall at Ava’s side, his nose twitching as he sniffed the salt-heavy air, ready to follow his pack wherever the danger led. The gray water continued to swirl, and the large shadow lingered just out of reach, a dark secret waiting to be uncovered beneath the waves.
The Magic Bubble Gift
The rainbow dolphin lingered in the shallow, gray surf, its intelligent eyes watching Ava with an intensity that made her heart race. With a playful yet urgent toss of its head, the creature flipped two objects from the water onto the sand. They landed with a soft thud near Ava’s feet. She reached down, her fingers brushing against the smooth surfa…
