Breakfast and Bright Colors
Billy Taylor bounced down the hallway with quick, thumping steps. His red sneakers tapped against the floorboards, and his curly brown hair stuck straight up in the back like a little bird's tail feather. He wore his soft denim overalls and a sunny yellow striped shirt that matched the bright morning light. Billy was ready for a big day.
He bounded straight into the kitchen. Golden sunbeams poured across the clean counter, warming the tile floor under his feet. Alice Miller stood near the counter, wearing her knitted mint-green cardigan. She turned around with a warm smile that crinkled the corners of her brown eyes.
"Good morning, Billy," Alice said in her gentle, rhythmic voice. "You are up bright and early today."
"Look, look, look!" Billy cheered, pointing toward the breakfast nook. "The sun is awake, and I am awake too!"
Alice laughed softly and walked over to the round wooden table. She set down a fresh, thick coloring sheet with bold black outlines. Next to the paper, she placed a brand new yellow box filled with jumbo crayons. The wax smelled sweet and clean, and the pointed tips looked sharp and smooth.
"I have a special project for us this morning," Alice said, pulling out a wooden chair for him. "Before we eat our breakfast, let's explore our sunny kitchen. Can you help me find some of our favorite everyday things and practice their names?"
Billy climbed right onto the chair. His hazel eyes grew wide as he scanned the room. "I can name everything!" he announced proudly.
"Let's see," Alice said encouragingly. "What do you see on the counter?"
Billy pointed his chubby finger straight ahead. "Apples! Big, round apples in the wooden bowl!"
"That is right," Alice said. "Bright red apples. And what is sitting on the stove over there?"
Right on cue, a thin puff of white steam hissed from the spout of the kettle. "The teapot!" Billy giggled, clapping his hands. "A big blue teapot! It whistles when it gets hot!"
"It sure does," Alice replied, smoothing the coloring page on the table. "Our drawing shows our whole kitchen. Look right here. Here is the round table, here is the stove, and here is a big, juicy apple waiting for some color. Would you like to pick a crayon?"
Billy reached into the box and grasped the thick red jumbo crayon in his small fist. He bent over the paper, pressing the tip against the white space inside the black lines of the apple. He pulled the crayon across the page with all his might, but his hand wobbled. The bold red mark darted straight across the line, scribbling over the edge of the leaf.
Billy let out a heavy sigh. His shoulders dropped, and his bottom lip stuck out. "Oh no," he murmured. "It went outside. The line is too big, and my hand is too small."
"It is alright, Billy," Alice said softly. She leaned down and placed her warm, steady hand over his chubby fingers. "Drawing takes a little practice, just like tying your shoes. We do not have to rush. Let's make slow, happy circles together."
Alice guided his hand gently. Round and round they moved the red wax, circling smoothly inside the thick curved boundary. Billy watched the white space disappear under the bright red layer. A wide grin spread across his rosy cheeks. The smooth wax filled the outline cleanly.
"Round and round," Billy sang, matching her rhythm. "Slow and happy circles!"
When Alice lifted her hand, Billy finished coloring the little curved bottom all by himself. "Look, Alice! I did it! A whole red apple!"
"You worked so hard, Billy, and you stayed right inside the line," Alice praised him. She walked to the counter and picked up the fruit bowl to set it near the sink. As she lifted the wooden dish, Billy noticed something bright resting on the clean counter where the bowl had been sitting.
"What is that?" Billy asked, leaning over the edge of the table.
A shiny silver star sticker caught the morning sun. Alice picked it up and handed it to Billy with a knowing smile.
"You found it," Alice said. "That is your reward for finishing the kitchen page. And here is a secret: every room in our cozy home has a special coloring challenge waiting for you today. Each time you finish a page, there will be another surprise to find."
Billy pressed the shiny sticker onto the front pocket of his denim overalls. Alice brought over a plate holding a slice of warm, golden toast spread with butter and a cup of cold milk. Billy munched his toast happily, taking big sips of the milk until he had a white mustache on his upper lip.
He wiped his mouth with his napkin, hopped down from his chair, and held his box of jumbo crayons tightly against his chest.
"I am ready!" Billy declared, trotting toward the doorway. "Let's go find the next room!"
The Big Green Sofa
Billy carried his yellow box of crayons through the wide doorway and into the living room. Afternoon sunlight streamed across the smooth wooden floorboards, painting long, warm patches of gold from the tall front windows. Alice walked behind him, carrying the big coloring book tucked under one arm. She stepped onto the thick, woven rug that rested …
