Out of Bounds

The roar of the crowd bled through the concrete walls long before Sebastian Cruz stepped onto the court.

It was already loud—too loud.

The kind of noise that pressed in on your skull settled behind your eyes. Final set. Tiebreak.

He rolled his shoulders once, jaw tight, racket hanging loose in his hand as he moved down the tunnel. Cameras flashed somewhere ahead, the flicker bouncing off the polished floor.

“Cruz!” Someone shouted. He didn’t look. Didn’t need to.

He knew exactly what they were waiting for—another win, another clean finish; another reason to keep his name at the top of every headline.

He exhaled slowly. Something was off. The court opened in front of him in a burst of light. The stadium erupted. Sebastian stepped into it like he owned it—because he did.

Or at least… he was supposed to. “Elena—left side.” Her name was called from somewhere behind her, but she was already moving.

Elena Hart jogged into position along the baseline; fingers curling briefly around the extra balls tucked at her side. That’s what mattered. Not the crowd. Not the cameras. Not the players. Still… her eyes flicked up. Just once. Sebastian Cruz. Closer than she’d ever been to him. He looked exactly like he did on TV—sharp, controlled, completely locked in. And somehow worse. The first few points moved too fast. Sebastian missed an easy return—ball sailing just wide. A murmur rippled through the crowd. His grip tightened. “Ball.” The word snapped across the court. Elena reacted instantly, stepping forward and tossing the ball cleanly toward him. Perfect arc. Perfect timing. Except—

He didn’t catch it. The ball hit the edge of his racket and dropped. A few people in the crowd laughed. Sebastian’s head snapped up, not at the crowd, but at her. “Try not to rush it,” he said, voice low but cutting. “It’s not that complicated.” Elena blinked once. Surprised—not by what he said… but how easily he said it. Like she wasn’t even a person. Like she was part of the equipment. Her fingers tightened slightly around the next ball. “I didn’t rush it,” she replied, calm, even. “You just missed it.” There was a pause. The kind that shouldn’t matter. Sebastian stared at her. Really looked this time. Not just a ball girl. Not just movement at the edge of his game. She held his gaze without flinching. That irritated him more than it should have. “Focus on your job,” he muttered, turning away. “I’ll handle mine.” Elena let out a quiet breath. Then, just loud enough— “Maybe you should.” That landed, and he felt it for a split second, something in his chest tightened—not anger exactly… Something sharper.

The next serve came hard, too hard. Sebastian launched into the point with controlled aggression, pushing, driving, and forcing the rally longer than it needed to be. The crowd fed off every strike louder than the last. He didn’t miss it again. But he didn’t settle either. Point lost. His frustration cracked. Not visible yet, but Elena saw it.

The way his shoulders tense. The way his breath came just a little too fast. The way his control… wasn’t as solid as everyone thought. “Ball.” This time, she didn’t hesitate. The ball hit his hand perfectly. He didn’t thank her. Didn’t look at her, but the tension between them didn’t disappear. It shifted. Somewhere in the distance, thunder rolled low across the sky. Or maybe it was just the crowd. Sebastian stepped back to the line, bouncing the ball once… twice… Eyes locked ahead. But for a fraction of a second— His focus slipped just enough to remember her voice. Maybe you should, his jaw clenched. He tossed the ball.

Swung— And everything changed.

Impact & Aftermath

The ball left Sebastian’s racket wrong. He felt it instantly. Out. Except it didn’t land out. It veered. A blur of neon yellow cutting across the edge of the court—and then impact.A sick, hollow sound. Elena didn’t even have time to react. The ball struck her face, snapping her head back. Her body followed a split second later, stumbling, off-balan
