Flour, Fire, and Failures

The GPS had been lying to me for the last eleven miles. This was not a metaphor. The little blue dot on my phone had placed me, with cheerful confidence, in the middle of what appeared to be a goat pasture three times before I found the turnoff for Oakhaven. Now I was parked on a cobblestone street that smelled like pine sap and someone's ambitious wood-burning ambitions, staring at the building that was apparently my inheritance.

Lord Biscuit pressed his nose to the car window and fogged it up. His cone clinked against the glass. He made a sound like a very small, very judgmental foghorn.

"I know," I said. "I see it."

The Hearth Bakery looked like it had been charming once, probably in a century that predated indoor plumbing. The sign above the door hung at a twenty-degree tilt. The window display held a dusty collection of what might have been decorative bread loaves or might have been actual bread loaves from 2019. A hand-lettered note taped to the door read: Closed for the foreseeable. The oven is in a mood.

Great-Aunt Harriet, I was discovering, had a gift for understatement.

I hauled my two suitcases, my bread starter in her insulated bag, and Lord Biscuit — cone and all — through the front door, which opened with a groan that sounded frankly emotional. The inside was dark and smelled like old flour and something electric, like the air before a thunderstorm. Dust motes hung in the single beam of light coming through the crooked shutters. The counter was thick with it. The chalkboard menu still listed a "Tuesday Special: Honey Rye and Something Wonderful."

I found the lights. Half of them worked. The other half flickered in a way that suggested they were considering it.

Lord Biscuit sat in the middle of the floor, stared at the far wall, and grumbled so low it was basically tectonic.

"Buddy, you ate a magical sock. You lost the right to opinions about ambiance."

He shifted his gaze to me. Unmoved.

The stone oven was in the back, massive and old and built into the wall like it had grown there. It was the kind of oven that made you believe people used to take baking seriously as a spiritual practice. I ran my hand along the iron door. The metal was warm. Not residual heat warm. Warm like something alive had been sitting against it. I checked the flue, found the kindling and starter log someone had left in the wood box, and told myself that the warmth was just good thermal mass and that I was a trained professional who had survived a chocolate fountain incident in front of the entire New York food media industry, and I could handle a slightly eccentric oven.

I lit the fire.

The oven accepted the flame, and then the flame turned violet.

I stepped back. The fire was a perfectly normal height, perfectly normal temperature, perfectly impossible color. It threw lavender shadows up the stone walls. Lord Biscuit was already behind my legs.

"That's fine," I said, to no one. "That's totally fine."

Then the oven door blew open, and out tumbled a very round, very bearded old man in velvet robes, trailing what appeared to be a small contrail of cinnamon-scented smoke. He hit the floor with a sound like a bag of very soft luggage, rolled, and came up sitting with his pointed hat over one eye and a look of profound satisfaction on his face.

"Ah," he said. "Sourdough." He sniffed the air. "You've brought a starter. Excellent. The last one went feral."

I was gripping a wooden spoon. I didn't remember picking up a wooden spoon. "Who," I said, "are you."

"Barnaby Wick." He righted his hat and patted his robes down as though checking his pockets. "Order of the Scorched Crust. I believe you have my standing order. One country loaf, sea salt, slight tang." He beamed up at me. "You must be Harriet's girl."

"Winnie. Pemberton. And this is a kitchen, not a— " I gestured at the oven, which had returned to a cheerful, normal orange. "Whatever that was."

"Portal," Barnaby said helpfully. "Has been for about three hundred years. Harriet never mentioned it?"

She had not. Harriet had left me a bakery, a letter about the starter culture, and a note about the neighbor's cat, and had failed entirely to include the part about the portal in the oven.

Someone knocked on the front door. Loudly. With authority.

Lord Biscuit turned, and the sound he made was distinctly different from his general ambient grumbling. It was assessing. He walked to the doorway between the kitchen and the shop floor and sat down facing the entrance like a small, cone-wearing tribunal.

The man who came through the door was tall enough that he had to angle his head slightly, which he did with the automatic ease of someone who'd been doing it his whole life. Sandy blond hair, the kind of gray eyes that didn't invite argument, a sheriff's badge on the chest of a flannel shirt that had no business making a law enforcement uniform look that good. He had a citation book in one hand.

He also had the particular expression of a man who had been hoping, quietly, desperately, that this call would turn out to be nothing.

His eyes went from me to Barnaby, still sitting on my floor with his hat crooked, and back to me.

"Unauthorized dimensional discharge," he said. "Section four, paragraph nine of the Oakhaven municipal code." He pulled a pen from his breast pocket. "Name?"

"Winnie Pemberton. I own this bakery. I just got here. I lit a fire and a wizard fell out of the oven, so if you could maybe lead with some context before you start writing tickets — "

"Barnaby." He didn't even look at the old man on the floor. His gray eyes were on me, and there was something behind them that wasn't entirely the flat official affect he was going for. "You're going to need to use the service portal. We've discussed this."

"The new baker makes an excellent loaf," Barnaby said, unperturbed. "I could sense it from three realms over."

"That's not relevant." The sheriff's pen moved across the citation. "Ms. Pemberton. The fine is forty dollars. First offense, so I'm not escalating. But the oven needs to be registered with the town before you operate it again. There's a form." He tore the slip free and held it out.

I crossed the floor and took it. His hand was large, and our fingers didn't touch, but the air between us had that same charged, ozone-heavy quality as the violet flame, and I was absolutely certain I was imagining it.

Lord Biscuit had approached during this exchange. He was now sitting directly on Sheriff Vance's boots, staring up at him with the flat, appraising look he reserved for new vets and men who tried to give him diet kibble.

"Your dog," the sheriff said, looking down.

"He's judging your footwear. He does that." I folded the citation. "Is he passing?"

Something shifted at the corner of the man's mouth. Not a smile. The structural possibility of one. "The registration office opens at eight," he said. "Don't light the oven again before then."

He turned to go. The oven, as though it had been waiting for exactly this moment, gave a long, resonant rumble that moved up through the stone floor and into my feet like a warning. Or a welcome. The sheriff paused in the doorway, just for a beat, and I watched his shoulders settle with the particular weight of a man who had retired from something he couldn't quite leave behind.

Then he was gone, and the bakery was quiet except for Barnaby helping himself to a leftover biscuit from the display case and Lord Biscuit returning to my side, his verdict apparently still pending.

"Nice boy," Barnaby said, through a mouthful of stale shortbread. "Terrible at retiring."

I looked down at the citation in my hand. Forty dollars, and it was barely noon on my first day.

The oven ticked warmly at my back. Waiting.
