The academy has fallen. The labyrinth is awake. Soren Veyl and his bonded partners, Raze and Orin, are trapped inside the library’s sentient core—a shifting pocket dimension of living shadows and liquid ink that feeds on fear, desire, and the fragile triad holding it together. Every corridor rewrites itself. Every whisper offers power at a price. Then the hunter arrives. Korrath Umbrael, the original consciousness of the parasitic ink, wants his power back—and he will unmake them to take it. Allies scatter through the dark. Old enemies surface. The ink demands deeper, darker consummation to keep the realm from collapsing, testing loyalty, lust, and the line between choice and possession. To survive, Soren must master the shadows before he becomes their perfect vessel. The labyrinth will not release its new masters without a devastating sacrifice. Aethelgard Academy is a dark paranormal fantasy of forbidden bonds, predatory magic, and the brutal cost of choosing each other when the dark already owns your names.

The Gravity of Shadows

Soren woke to the sensation of liquid midnight filling his lungs. The transition from the physical academy had been violent, a tearing collapse that left him bruised and coughing on his side in a world that should not have existed. He dragged in air that tasted wrong, thick with the metallic tang of demon blood and the dry dust of centuries-old parchment. Overhead, there was no sky. Only a ceiling of churning black script rolled and rewrote itself in endless loops, silver edges flashing like distant lightning.

He pushed himself up on shaking arms. Ink slicked every inch of his skin, dripping from his hair and clothes in heavy ropes. A few feet away, Raze knelt in the same shimmering pool, crimson skin streaked darker where fresh cuts still wept. The demon’s brands burned across his chest in frantic, rhythmic pulses that matched the low throb under Soren’s own ribs. Orin lay half-submerged beyond him, silver-white hair floating around his face like pale kelp. The fae’s eyes snapped open the moment Soren’s gaze touched him, winter-green irises too sharp for the disorientation twisting through the rest of them.

“Move,” Raze snarled. He lunged across the ink, claws closing around Soren’s upper arm hard enough to bruise. The contact sent a jolt straight through the living marks. Black lines under Soren’s sleeve tore upward, racing over his shoulder and throat in greedy spirals. Raze’s brands answered with a flare of molten red. “Up. Now. This place is already shifting.”

The floor beneath them stretched like pulled taffy. What had been solid stone a breath earlier softened and lengthened, carrying the three of them several yards before it hardened again with a wet crack. Orin rose in one fluid motion, midnight-blue robes hanging in ink-soaked tatters. He lifted one elegant hand and summoned a sphere of pale-gold fae light. The glow bloomed for half a second, pure and clean, then the surrounding shadows lunged. They swallowed the light whole, leaving only a suffocating twilight that pressed against their eyes.

“Interesting,” Orin murmured, though the clinical edge in his voice cracked on the second syllable. “The domain is actively rejecting celestial and fae radiance alike. We are no longer guests here.”

Soren’s psychic senses opened without his permission. A billion overlapping whispers slammed into him at once—the collective memory of every book, every binder, every soul the library had ever claimed. The noise was not sound. It was pressure, a screaming archive forcing itself down his throat and into the hollow spaces behind his eyes. He staggered. Raze caught him against a broad chest, one clawed hand splayed possessively over Soren’s sternum as if daring the labyrinth to try again.

“Breathe through it,” the demon ordered, voice low and rough. “You’re broadcasting fear like a beacon. The walls are listening.”

He was right. The terrain answered them. Where Soren’s panic spiked, the floor heaved upward into jagged ridges. Where Raze’s aggression rolled off him in waves of heat, the ridges sharpened into black crystal spikes. Orin’s carefully banked grief pulled the script-ceiling lower until it brushed the tops of Raze’s horns. They were not simply trapped. The magic they had once believed they commanded was digesting them, tasting their emotions and reshaping the stratum in reply.

Soren twisted free enough to look behind them. The ragged tear that had dropped them from the collapsing academy was gone. Smooth, rippling wall stood in its place, already writing new sentences across its surface. No exit. No return.

“The brands,” he rasped. He shoved his sleeve higher. The ink had spread past his elbow, climbing in dense calligraphy that had not been there minutes ago. Across Raze’s collarbones the crimson script widened, crawling toward his throat. On Orin’s luminous skin the silver scar over his heart darkened and lengthened, feeding thin black tendrils outward like roots seeking soil.

Orin’s detachment fractured further. He stepped in close, long fingers hovering over the expanding mark on Soren’s arm without quite touching. “Interconnected. Dangerous. The circuit is no longer a sealed triad bond. It is becoming a living root system for the entire domain. If one of us falters, the labyrinth will use the others as anchors—or as fuel.”

Raze’s gold-red eyes burned. He pulled Soren tighter against his side, positioning his own body between the psychic and the writhing walls. “Then nobody falters. We hold. We find higher ground. And if this place wants a fight, it can choke on us.”

The walls answered first. Liquid shadow peeled away from the nearest surface in thick sheets. Shapes rose—distorted, ink-formed versions of academy students Soren half-recognized. Faces melted and reformed. Limbs bent at wrong angles. Mouths opened on needle teeth and the soft, wet sound of pages tearing. They spilled forward in a silent wave, hollow silver eyes locked on the triad’s glowing brands.

Soren felt the library’s command rise through the ink like a second heartbeat. Bind. Seal the circuit. Feed us or be unmade.

Raze bared his teeth and shoved Soren behind him. Orin’s hands filled with colder, harder light that the shadows could not immediately devour. The first of the beasts lunged. The floor stretched again, eager and hungry, and the three of them had nowhere left to run except deeper into the dark that already knew their names.

Veins of Liquid Midnight

They ran until the corridor simply stopped trying to kill them. One moment the walls were stretching into needle-toothed mouths. The next, the floor hardened into warped oak boards and spat them into a pocket of still air that smelled faintly of dust and spilled lamp oil. The space resembled a desecrated reading room yanked straight out of the old
