In Crestfall, a county surveyor is found packed upright in a mine shaft, lungs filled with volcanic ash that the mountains never made. Homicide partners Emily Bennett and Shawn Mitchell, newly engaged and trying to keep that fact unofficial, follow the foreign dust to an industrial dump and a paper trail of soil-reclamation permits. At every scene the killer leaves coordinates. Each pin lands on private land owned by the department’s top brass. Then the precinct opens an administrative audit built to split their unit. Permits vanish. Clerks stall. A second body appears in the same impossible ash, with a new pin on a captain’s hunting lot. Emily counts fours and follows the geology anyway. Shawn treats command-owned dirt like any other crime scene. The killer keeps mapping the house that signs their paychecks. Murder and Ash is a taut police procedural about forensic truth, institutional cover, and two detectives who choose the case over the promise they just made each other.
