Betraying the badge for the woman who owns his heart and his secrets
by hadi Rezaei
Steven Keller is a ghost in the machine. To the world, he is a notorious cop-killer. To the FBI, he is their most dangerous asset, tasked with infiltrating the Russo crime syndicate from the inside out. After a brutal stint in maximum security to earn his stripes, Steven finally gains entry into the inner circle of Frank DeLuca, the cold-blooded kingpin of the East Coast. But the mission takes a lethal turn when he meets Elena Russo. Ethereal, defiant, and trapped in a gilded cage of her father’s making, Elena is everything Steven shouldn’t want. Their attraction is an immediate, explosive force—a forbidden spark in a world made of gunpowder. As Steven gathers the intel needed to burn the Russo empire to the ground, he finds himself caught between his sworn duty and a woman who sees the man behind his violent mask. With suspicious enforcers closing in and a rival marriage alliance looming, Steven must decide: will he finish the job he started, or will he destroy his career to save the girl he was never supposed to love? In the mafia, the price of betrayal is a slow death, and Steven is playing the ultimate high-stakes game.

The Legend of a Killer
Steven Keller stood at attention in the windowless briefing room at FBI Headquarters, the air tasting of recycled cold and burnt coffee. Assistant Director Jessica Farrell did not offer him a chair. She never did when the assignment was going to cost a man his name.
"You understand what we're asking," she said. Her voice was clipped, all edges. "We do not send you undercover as a dealer or a driver. We send you as a monster. Five officers go down in an alley tonight. The whole country watches you pull the trigger. Local PD will believe every bullet is real. Your file disappears from every database that matters. You become pure legend."
Steven kept his face blank. Steel-blue eyes stayed fixed on the wall map behind her, the red pin stuck deep in Russo territory. "And after the cameras stop rolling?"
"You run. They chase. They catch you. Maximum security. Vincent Moretti is already inside serving eighteen months on a weapons beef. You get close to him. You make him believe you're the real article—the cop-killer who doesn't flinch. When he walks free, you walk free with him. Straight into Frank DeLuca's house." She stepped closer. The scent of her sharp perfume cut the sterile air. "Once those gates close, Keller, we cannot reach you. No extraction. No clean phone. You are off the books. If they smell rat, they will peel the skin off you slow. Prioritize the mission over whatever is left of your soul. Clear?"
"Crystal."
Three hours later the alley smelled of wet brick and gun oil. Rain slicked the asphalt under the lone sodium light. Steven's denim jacket was already soaked through. The five men in uniform waited in position exactly as rehearsed—agents who had volunteered to die on camera so the legend could live. Blank rounds. Squibs packed tight against Kevlar. Blood packs that would bloom dark and convincing under high-definition news lenses already circling overhead in unmarked vans.
A shout. Then the chaos they had scripted.
Steven raised the Glock. The first shot cracked like a bone breaking. The lead officer spun, crimson exploding across his chest as he hit the ground hard. Steven moved with the cold efficiency they had drilled into him for months—two more rounds into the second man, center mass, then a double-tap that dropped the third against a dumpster. Brass spun smoking into puddles. The fourth officer tried to draw; Steven put one through his throat and watched the arterial spray paint the wall. The fifth went down on his knees, hands half-raised, and Steven finished him with a shot that snapped the man's head back.
Sirens howled in the distance, perfectly timed. Steven holstered the weapon, heart slamming against ribs that felt too tight, and ran. The chase was cinema and nightmare at once—tires screaming across wet streets, helicopters chopping the low clouds, every squad car in the city pouring into the hunt because they truly believed five of their own were cooling in that alley. He took corners hard, engine roaring, until spike strips finally shredded the tires and the sedan fishtailed into a concrete barrier.
Hands dragged him out onto broken glass. Cuffs bit deep into his wrists. Cameras flashed white. He gave them nothing but silence and a dead-eyed stare, building the tough-guy shell brick by brick while the local cops screamed cop-killer into his face and spit hit his cheek. The booking photos would freeze that look forever. The nation would hate him by morning.
Processing was a blur of fingerprint ink, orange jumpsuit, and the metallic taste of fear he refused to show. They loaded him onto the transport bus under heavy guard, chains linking ankles and wrists. Through the reinforced window the prison rose like a black iron fist against the bruised dawn sky—razor wire glittering, gun towers watching, concrete walls thick enough to bury a man alive.
Steven sat rigid on the hard bench. Rain still traced dirty lines down the glass. Jessica's last words echoed: prioritize the mission. His old life was ash now. Badge, apartment, the clean version of himself who believed in clear lines between right and wrong—all of it erased so he could crawl into the belly of the Russo machine and tear it apart from the inside.
The bus hissed to a stop. Steel gates clanged open somewhere ahead. Steven's scarred knuckles flexed once against the cuffs. He met the cold stare of those walls and felt the last clean piece of himself lock away for good.
Whatever walked out of here one day would not be the same man who walked in.
