The year is 1026. In a stormy fjord in Western Norway, young Eirik is appointed guardian of an ancient secret. Equipped with a special garment and a silver pin shaped like a raven's head, he must take his oath: He must keep silent forever, leave his loved ones, and hide the secret where no one will ever look. When hostile longships cut through the fog, Eirik must flee into the unknown with a legacy that must never fall into the wrong hands. A thousand years later, a freight train rolls quietly out of Bergen Station in the morning light. In the restricted area, six silent people oversee the loading of a dark, ancient oak chest. They are the modern guardians, and their mission is unchanged. When past and present are woven together, an epic mystery is revealed that stretches through centuries of Norwegian history. How far is one willing to go to protect the truth? Ronny Melkevik delivers an intense historical thriller about duty, betrayal, and a secret that has survived for a thousand years.

The Guardian

Western Norway, around the year 1026.

For three days and nights, the rain had fallen relentlessly.

The fjord lay dark and heavy beneath the sky, and the clouds hung so low that they swallowed the peaks surrounding the homestead. Only the sound of the waves against the smooth bedrock and the distant wind through the pine forest broke the silence.

Eirik let his hand run over the dark blue woolen cloak folded before him.

It looked like a chieftain's cloak.

It was not.

Every gold thread, every silver rivet, and every embroidered pattern had been stitched with a purpose. No one outside the innermost circle knew the meaning. To most, it was a beautiful adornment. To those who knew, the garment was something else entirely.

A promise.

A key.

And a burden.

He raised his gaze toward the six people standing in the longhouse.

No one said a word.

They knew why they were gathered.

On the table between them lay three chests.

One was filled with gold arm rings, silver goblets, and coins from distant realms.

The second contained royal seals, carved rune staves, and parchments that no one outside the room had ever seen.

The third was empty.

"When the sun rises tomorrow," the eldest said in a low voice, "no one will know the truth anymore."

Eirik nodded.

He had known this moment would come ever since he was a boy.

He had not been chosen because he was the strongest.

Not because he was the wisest.

He had been chosen because he could keep silent.

The eldest pushed the garment toward him.

"From this day on, you are the guardian."

The words struck the room like the toll of a church bell.

No one protested.

No one offered congratulations.

For everyone knew what it meant.

The guardian could never return to a normal life.

He could not tell his family the truth.

He could not pass the secret on of his own accord.

And if anyone attempted to force it out of him, it was to die with him.

The eldest drew out a small bronze box.

Inside lay a silver pin shaped like a raven's head.

He fastened it to the collar of the garment.

"In a thousand years," he said quietly, "someone will search for this."

A faint unease stirred through the room.

"Do you truly believe that?"

The eldest smiled without joy.

"Mankind never changes."

The silence stretched long.

Then the door opened.

An icy wind swept through the longhouse.

A young scout came running in, soaked to the bone.

"Ships!"

Everyone turned.

"Three longships making their way into the fjord."

Eirik stepped outside.

Far out on the fjord, he caught sight of dark sails against the horizon.

Not friends.

Not traders.

They were coming to take what was hidden here.

The eldest came to stand beside him.

"Then the time has come."

Eirik looked one last time toward the homestead, his family, and the steep mountains among which he had grown up.

Then he picked up the garment.

"Where shall I take it?" he asked.

The eldest answered without hesitation.

"Where no one will ever look."

The Bergen Line, our time.

A freight train glided quietly out of a cordoned-off track area as the first rays of sunlight struck the roofs above Bergen Station.

None of the travelers over on the neighboring platforms noticed the heavy, dark oak chest being hoisted aboard.

Nor could they know that six people were watching every single lift with bated breath.

For the first time in nearly a thousand years, the guardian was on a journey once more.

Newspaper Headlines and Departure

The fog still hung low over the tracks in Bergen, like a veil between metal and morning dew. Passengers streamed aboard the train to Oslo. Voices mingled with the rolling of suitcases and the beeping of doors opening and closing. Jamie Svensen walked along the platform with steady steps. His hands rested lightly on his belt. His gaze drifted over t…
