Stan Johnson writes picture books for kids who practice too hard, give up too fast, and then try again. He grew up around community bands and secondhand instrument shops, where every case seemed to hold a story. The Talking Trumpet grew out of those rooms, and out of watching young players compare themselves to people who had already put in years of work. Stan lives in the United States, where he still believes the best music lessons happen when someone is willing to listen.

The Talking Trumpet

Patience, practice, and the secret inside an old music shop.

  • Children's Picture Books

Leo loves the trumpet. He loves it so much that waiting to get better feels impossible. He listens to the great players and wishes there were a secret that could make him sound like them overnight. One afternoon he steps into an unusual old music shop. The man behind the counter is known only as The Curator. The shop is full of instruments, but The Curator does not sell them the ordinary way. He offers Leo something else: a trumpet that seems to have a voice of its own. What the trumpet has to say is not a shortcut. It is a story about showing up, listening, and letting time do its quiet work. With warmth and wonder, The Talking Trumpet follows a young musician who learns that greatness is not a trick you find on a shelf. It is a friendship you build, one note at a time. A picture-book adventure for children who love music, magic shops, and discovering that patience can be the bravest kind of practice.
