A single misplaced word costs more points on a mortuary science anatomy exam than almost any other type of mistake. A student who writes "the wound is above the knee" instead of "the wound is superior to the knee" has described the same injury, but only one of those answers earns full credit. Examiners grade on precision, not on general comprehension. This chapter builds that precision from the ground up, starting with the terminology that every dissector must use automatically, without pausing to translate everyday language into anatomical language first.

Key Concepts

Before naming any structure, establish two things: anatomical position and laterality. Anatomical position means the body stands facing forward, arms at the sides, palms facing forward, feet flat and parallel. Every directional term you use assumes this position, even if the body in front of you is lying supine on a table with the arms crossed over the chest. If you skip this step, your left and right will drift, and a drifted left or right on an exam answer is graded wrong regardless of how well you understood the underlying anatomy.

Laterality is the second checkpoint. Always confirm whether you are describing the patient's right or the patient's left, not your own right or left as you stand across from the body. This single habit prevents one of the most common and most penalized errors in practical exams.

Once position and laterality are locked in, work from surface to deep. Identify skin, then superficial fascia, then muscle, then the deeper structures such as vessels, nerves, or bone. Naming layers in this order keeps your dissection notes organized and mirrors how examiners expect you to build a positional description.

Finally, format every exam answer using a repeatable structure: direction plus side plus landmark relationship. For example, "the laceration is located in the right anterior thigh, superior to the patella and lateral to the femoral artery." That single sentence contains a directional term, a side, and two landmark relationships. This is the formula examiners are trained to look for, and it is the formula you should train yourself to produce without thinking.

Tier Two: Laterality and Vertebral Levels. A prosector's note states that a needle mark is found near the L4 vertebra on the right side, slightly toward the back. The correct exam-style phrasing is: "the puncture site is located at the level of the fourth lumbar vertebra (L4), on the right, in the posterior lumbar region." A second example involving the thoracic spine at T6 follows the same pattern: "the lesion is at the level of the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6), left of midline, in the posterior thoracic region." Always name the vertebral level using its full anatomical label, not shorthand alone, in a written answer.

Tier Three: Avoiding Swapped Relationships in Regional Spaces. This tier catches the most students off guard. Consider the femoral region: the femoral vein lies medial to the femoral artery, and the femoral artery lies medial to the femoral nerve, moving from medial to lateral in the sequence vein, artery, nerve. Students frequently reverse this order under exam pressure and lose points even when they clearly understand the region's contents. The same risk applies to the knee: the popliteal artery lies deep to the popliteal vein in the popliteal fossa, and reversing "deep" and "superficial" here is one of the most common practical exam errors reported by instructors. When a region has a known, fixed order of structures, memorize that order as a sequence rather than as isolated facts.

  • Confusing anterior and posterior under time pressure. Anchor your thinking to the sternum for anterior and the spine for posterior every single time.
