The Neuro-Somatic Manifestoes
Brainwaves, ballot laws, and the body's demand for civic agency
by Tanya Robie
Your nervous system already knows the election is rigged against repair. The Neuro-Somatic Manifestoes maps five brainwave states—Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma—onto New York's closed primaries, corporate duopoly, and the ecological collapse we keep filtering out. Greg Robie writes from interoception outward: how the body registers stress while statute locks voters into two brands; how tribal memory is programmed in the Theta realm; how Alpha comfort blinds us to the smoke; how Beta cortisol spikes every cycle and never lets reform land. These neuro-somatic manifestos refuse both cynicism and spiritual bypass. They argue that passive acquiescence is not a political opinion. It is a biological habit—and habits can be interrupted. If you are exhausted, divided, and still unwilling to pretend the planet is optional, this collection is a demand, not a pep talk: claim democratic agency the way a body claims breath.

To The Editor, (393 words)
The primary mandate of our American experiment is to form “a more perfect Union.” Yet, here in New York, our state election laws actively work against this ideal by institutionalizing factionalism at the expense of our constitutionally protected liberty of conscience.
By weaponizing steep ballot access thresholds, maintaining closed primaries that shut out millions of independent voters, and splitting election administration down a strict partisan line, NYS Election Law prioritizes party preservation over civic cohesion. The system forces a diverse populace into narrow, zero-sum camps, alienating a growing segment of unenrolled citizens who find themselves structurally disenfranchised from the very processes meant to serve them.
To achieve a better Ordering and Preservation and Furtherance of the Common Good, local party committees and independent citizens must confront a fundamental choice between two distinct archetypes of human agency and leadership. It is the timeless tension popularized by Robert F. Kennedy: “Some men see things as they are and say, why; I dream things that never were and say, why not?”
The first archetype looks at our rigid, exclusionary duopoly, accepts its flawed mechanics as an unchangeable reality, and passively asks, “Why?”. This perspective treats independent thought as a threat, enforces ideological conformity, and reduces the common good to a transaction of partisan spoils. It accepts a fractured electorate as the cost of doing business.
The second archetype looks at our deep systemic polarization and dares to imagine an inclusive, fully realized democracy that has never yet existed, asking, “Why not?”. This visionary leadership treats individual liberty of conscience as the engine of democracy. It seeks to break down statutory barriers, design open systems, and invite every citizen back into the project of self-governance.
At the price of ours and our children’s children’s souls, will we placate the passive resignation that looks at an entrenched system and asks “why?" Local committees and unenrolled denizens alike have the agency to embrace the courageous imagination that looks at a truly representative democracy and asks "why not?”. Today, it is well past the time to reform our election laws, open our primaries, and build a framework that elevates our human agency and genuinely perfects our Union …& this in the midst of an abruptly changed climate system within a trusted delusional economic paradigm of infinite growth – i.e., limited liability law enabled ‘growth’ – on a finite planet.
What say you?
Sincerely,

The Neuro-Somatic ManifestoesTo the Living Flesh and Bone of New York:Deep beneath the noise of campaigns lies the absolute truth of our survival. Your body knows it first. Through the quiet channels of interoception, your nervous system tracks the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the soil that sustains you. When the climate system changes…
