Tell It How Far Along You Are
The import asks one honest question โ what is actually in this file โ and extracts accordingly. Each level includes everything above it, so you are never made to pretend a pile of notes is a finished draft.
A description, some scattered thinking, a paragraph about who it is for. The import pulls out the title, the description, the genres, the target audience and your writing style โ the last one read from your own prose, so the chapters you write afterwards sound like the notes you wrote before.
Costs nothing. This is the level a book with no chapters starts at, and it is enough to plan the whole thing.

How the Import Works
Six steps. You can run it on a brand new book, or on a book that already exists here if you decide halfway through that the draft on your hard drive should be in it after all.
Upload
Drag in a Word .docx. That is the one format the importer takes, because it is the format that carries structure โ headings, emphasis, tables and the images embedded in the document. Anything else, save it as .docx first and the product shows you how.
Review what it found
The importer reads the document and detects its structure on its own: chapters, front matter and back matter, the title page, footnotes and the embedded images. You get a review screen listing every section it found, where you can split one that ran two chapters together, merge two halves of the same chapter, or send a section back to be detected again โ before anything is written into the book.
Choose the extras
Extract characters, for fiction. Extract citations, for non-fiction. Each one is a switch, each one is priced on the same screen, and the total is shown before anything runs. Images and formatting are always kept, at no extra cost.
Import
Everything the file holds is written into the book as ordinary editable records: the title, the author, the blurb, the language, the genre details, the story bible and the chapter outline, the characters, and the chapters themselves. The language is detected automatically across more than 25 languages, and the author is taken from the document when it names one and from your account when it does not. Nothing is locked, nothing is marked as imported-and-untouchable.
Keep writing
The book is now a book here. Write the chapters that are missing, regenerate the ones you never liked, run the AI chat over a passage, add chapter illustrations. The imported chapters and the new ones sit in the same list and behave identically.

Cover, blurb, categories, keywords, back matter, copyright page, export. DOCX export on any paid plan; formatted PDF, EPUB and print-ready files on Pro. There is also a translation step at export if you want a second-language edition.
Your Formatting Is Not Collateral Damage
The reason people do not import drafts into writing tools is that they come back as plain text โ three months of headings, emphasis and tables reduced to one undifferentiated column. That does not happen here: bold, italic, headings, tables, line breaks and the images embedded in your .docx all come across, always, with nothing to switch on and nothing extra to pay.
Images come with the text
Pictures embedded in a .docx are carried into the chapters they appear in. Free accounts get a 50 MB image budget per import and paid accounts 500 MB, checked before the run rather than during it.
Structure survives
Headings, bold, italic, tables and line breaks are preserved rather than flattened, so the shape you gave the manuscript is still there when it arrives.
You approve the split
Chapter detection is shown to you before it is saved. If a section ran two chapters together, split it; if a chapter arrived in halves, merge them; if a section came out wrong, retry it. Nothing is written into the book until the split on screen is the one you want.
Very long books have a route
A hundred chapters, or 200,000 words, is the ceiling for a single file. Above that, the product's own advice is to bring the manuscript in as the first book of a series and continue as the second โ which is a supported path, not a workaround. A series import is 50 credits per book, and your first one is free until you buy anything.

The import is not only available at creation. An existing book here has its own import screen, so a draft you find later can still go into the book you have already been building. If an import came out wrong, "Start over" clears it and re-importing that book is free โ you already paid for it.

A non-fiction import extracts the details, per-chapter outlines with key topics and learning outcomes, the chapter text, and optionally the citations and references from each chapter โ instead of trying to find characters in a business book.
