Hemingway App grades your sentences. AIWriteBook helps you write the book

Hemingway App, also called Hemingway Editor, is a readability checker. It colors the sentences that are hard to read, points at adverbs and passive voice, and gives your text a grade level. That is a sharp tool for tightening prose. Writing a book is a bigger job: a plan, chapters that hold together, an edit, a cover and publishing files. AIWriteBook is built for that whole job.

A readability meter and a book workshop

Hemingway measures the text you give it. AIWriteBook works on the book you are making. Both care about clear prose, but they answer different questions.

What a readability score sees in fiction, and what it misses

Here is a short scene of the kind novelists write every day. The notes below describe what Hemingway's highlights would point at, and how a book-aware edit treats the same lines.

Draft

She walked slowly to the window, and the letter, which had been delivered that morning by a boy she did not recognize, was held so tightly in her hand that the paper had begun to tear along the fold she had made when she first read it, standing in the hallway, unable to move.

After an edit that keeps the scene

She crossed to the window. The letter had come that morning, carried by a boy she did not know, and she held it so tightly that the paper was tearing along the fold she had made when she first read it, standing in the hallway, unable to move.

  • A readability checker marks the whole thing red: 54 words in a single sentence. It would also point at the adverb "slowly" and the passive "was held". Those flags are fair.
  • What it cannot know is that the long second half is deliberate. The run-on is the character's shock. Cutting it into four tidy sentences would raise the score and lose the moment. Our note on show, don't tell covers this trade-off.
  • In AIWriteBook you would ask the chapter AI chat to cut the adverb and the passive but keep the breathless sentence, then accept or reject each change it proposes. The edit knows the rest of the chapter, because it lives inside it.
  • Reading level does matter for children's and middle-grade books, and Hemingway's grade is a decent quick check there. For the prose itself, the grammar and style check flags filler and repetition as optional suggestions rather than rules.

Hemingway App for books: questions

Is Hemingway App good for editing a novel?

It is useful for tightening prose: it shows long sentences, adverbs and passive voice at a glance. It does not judge plot, pacing or consistency across chapters, and a readability grade cannot tell a clumsy long sentence from a deliberate one, so treat its colors as prompts rather than rules.

What is a good Hemingway alternative for authors?

If you only want a readability score, other checkers do the same job. If you want to write and edit a book, AIWriteBook covers drafting from an outline, a grammar and style check with a reason for every fix, an AI chat for rewrites you accept one by one, and formatting for print and ebook.

Does Hemingway App write text with AI?

The Plus subscription adds AI sentence rewrites, 5,000 or 10,000 a month depending on the plan, plus grammar fixes and tone adjustments. The Classic desktop app has no AI features.

How do the prices compare?

Hemingway's web editor is free, the Classic desktop app is $19.99 once, and Plus costs $100 or $150 a year. AIWriteBook is free to start with your outline and first chapter, plans begin at $12 a month billed yearly, and packs start at $20.

Can I use Hemingway and AIWriteBook together?

Yes. Some authors paste a finished chapter into Hemingway for a quick density check, then make the actual changes in AIWriteBook, where the edit sees the whole book and every change can be rejected.
