Free to upload is not free to publish
Amazon charges nothing to list an ebook or paperback, and it will even give you a free ISBN for print. We cover exactly what KDP itself charges, and what it takes out of each sale, in is Amazon KDP free?. This article is about everything around the upload: the editor, the cover, the ISBN you may want to own, formatting, proof copies and the ads that get the book seen.
The honest range is wide. A disciplined first-timer can publish a clean ebook for under $500. A polished series launch with professional editing, a custom illustrated cover and an ad budget runs well past $6,000. Neither is wrong. What is wrong is spending $3,000 in the wrong places and nothing in the right one.
Every cost, line by line
Typical 2026 market rates for a novel of around 80,000 words. Freelance prices vary by experience and genre, so treat these as planning ranges, not quotes.
| Line item | Typical range | What decides the price |
|---|---|---|
| Developmental edit | $1,600 - $5,000 | Roughly 2 to 6 cents per word. Big-picture structure, plot and pacing. |
| Copyedit or line edit | $1,000 - $3,000 | Roughly 1.2 to 4 cents per word. Sentence-level clarity and consistency. |
| Proofread | $500 - $1,500 | Roughly 0.6 to 2 cents per word. Final typo and formatting pass. |
| Cover design | $50 - $1,200 | Premade covers sit at the low end; custom illustrated covers and full paperback wraps at the top. |
| ISBNs (US, Bowker) | $0 - $295 | Free from KDP for print, $125 for one of your own, $295 for a block of ten. |
| Interior formatting | $0 - $400 | Free with DIY tools, a one-time software licence, or a freelancer per title. |
| Proof copies and shipping | $15 - $60 | Printing cost plus shipping for two or three paperback proofs. |
| Launch ads | $0 - $1,500 | Amazon Ads, newsletter promos and social ads in the first ninety days. |
| Audiobook narration (optional) | $1,800 - $4,000 | Human narrators usually charge $200 to $400 per finished hour, and a novel runs nine or ten hours. |

Editing: the biggest bill, and the one to plan first
Editing is priced per word, which is why the same editor quotes a 50,000-word cozy mystery at half the price of a 110,000-word epic fantasy. Before you request quotes, know your exact word count; our free word counter gives it in seconds.
Not every book needs all three passes. A first novel almost always benefits from a developmental edit, because structure problems are the ones authors cannot see in their own work. A seasoned author writing book six in a series may skip straight to a copyedit and proofread. How to find, vet and brief the right person is covered in how to hire a freelance editor.
You can also shrink the bill by sending the editor a cleaner manuscript. Editors charge more, or take longer, for drafts full of repetition, tense slips and typos. Running every chapter through AIWriteBook's grammar and style check, and tightening pacing with the chapter AI chat (which shows each suggested change as a diff you accept or reject), means your editor spends their paid hours on the story instead of on commas.
Ask for a sample edit of the first 1,000 to 2,000 words before you commit. Most editors offer one free or cheaply, and it tells you more than any portfolio.

Three sample budgets

Bootstrap
$0 - $500
Self-edit with beta readers and software checks, a premade or AI-assisted cover, the free KDP ISBN, DIY formatting, and organic marketing only. Right for a first short book, a niche non-fiction guide or a test of a genre.
Standard
$1,500 - $4,000
A professional copyedit and proofread, a genre-appropriate premade or mid-range custom cover, your own ISBN, and a few hundred dollars of Amazon Ads to learn what converts. This is where most serious indie novels land.
Premium
$6,000+
All three editing passes, a custom illustrated cover with a full paperback wrap, a block of ISBNs for the series, and a structured launch with newsletter promos and ads. It pays off mainly when book one opens a series you are committed to finishing.
Spend your budget on the parts that sell
Draft, self-edit, format and design a cover concept in AIWriteBook, then hand a cleaner manuscript to your editor and save the money for the cover and the launch.
Where to save and where not to
Safe places to save
- Formatting. Clean KDP-ready EPUB and print PDF files no longer require a specialist. AIWriteBook's book formatting and export produces both from the same manuscript.
- ISBNs, if you only sell on Amazon. The free KDP ISBN is fine for an Amazon-only paperback; buy your own when you plan wide distribution.
- Early cover concepts. Explore directions with our free AI book cover generator or the in-app AI book cover designer before paying a designer, so you brief them with a clear direction.
- Keyword and category research. The free KDP keyword research tool covers what paid tools charge for.
Places where cheap costs you sales
- The cover on a genre book. Readers judge romance, thriller and fantasy by the thumbnail. A cover that looks off-genre will undercut every ad dollar you spend; see book cover design tips.
- At least one human editing pass on a first novel. Software catches errors. It does not tell you that act two sags.
- The blurb. It is free to rewrite and it decides whether a page visit turns into a sale.
Will you earn it back?
At the 70% ebook royalty, a $4.99 ebook earns about $3.40 per sale after Amazon's small delivery fee. A $2,500 Standard budget therefore needs roughly 735 ebook sales to break even, before you count paperbacks, Kindle Unlimited page reads or audio.
Plug in your own price, page count and format in our free KDP royalty calculator to get the break-even number for your book rather than ours.
The real return on a first book is rarely the first book. Editing, cover style and an engaged reader list carry over to book two, and series readers buy the whole run. That is why the premium tier makes most sense once you know you will write the sequel, and why AIWriteBook's book series support, which writes book two with the characters, world and events of book one already in context, matters more to long-term profit than any single line in this budget.
For ad spend specifically, start small and measure. Amazon Ads for books, a beginner's guide shows how to test with a daily budget you can afford to lose.
Self-publishing costs FAQ
Listing on KDP is free. Most indie novels that compete in a popular genre spend between $1,500 and $4,000 on editing, cover, ISBN, formatting and launch ads. A careful first-timer can publish for under $500 by doing editing and formatting themselves.
Editing. Because editors charge per word, a full developmental edit, copyedit and proofread on an 80,000-word novel can cost several thousand dollars, more than every other line item combined.
Not for Amazon. KDP assigns a free ISBN for paperbacks and ebooks do not need one there. Buy your own if you want your imprint listed as the publisher or plan to distribute the same edition through other retailers.
Technically yes: self-edit, use the free KDP ISBN, format with free tools and design your own cover. The trade-off is time and, if the cover or editing falls short, fewer sales.
It depends on price, genre and marketing. Divide your total budget by your royalty per sale to find the break-even number, then compare it with realistic monthly sales. Many authors only earn back their costs across a series rather than on one title.
The bottom line
Budget editing first, cover second and everything else last. Save on formatting, ISBNs and research, which are now cheap or free, and keep your money for the two things readers actually see: a clean story and a cover that signals the genre.
