What you are buying
BookBub sends a daily email of discounted and free ebooks to readers who chose their genres and retailers. A Featured Deal is a slot in that email, picked by BookBub's editors. You do not buy the slot and hope; you apply, and you pay only if your book is chosen.
That editorial filter is the whole value. Readers trust the list because most books never make it, which is why a Featured Deal can move more copies in a day than weeks of ads. BookBub says it receives hundreds of submissions a day and selects about a quarter of them.
The aim for most authors is not profit on the discounted book. It is rank, reviews and, above all, sales of the next books in a series. Keep that in mind when you do the math below.
The hard requirements
These come straight from BookBub's partner requirements. Miss one and the book is not considered, however good it is. Tick what is true for your book.
0/7 requirements met
Not eligible yet. Fix the unticked items before you submit.
The submission form, field by field
You submit from a free BookBub Partners account. The form is short, and every field is a chance to look like an easier yes.
- 1
The book
Add the book with its retailer links. Make sure the edition you link is the one that will carry the discount, in every store you list.
- 2
Deal price and regular price
Free and $0.99 are the most competitive. BookBub says lower prices convert better and that editors lean toward them. If a $2.99 deal is rejected, resubmitting lower is the one case where you do not have to wait four weeks.
- 3
Dates
You can submit up to 30 days ahead. Flexible dates raise your odds because editors are filling a calendar, not judging your book in a vacuum.
- 4
Regions and retailers
Select every region and every retailer where the price will actually drop. A US-only, Amazon-only deal reaches a fraction of the list.
- 5
Category
Pick the category your readers would pick. Being open to a related category gives editors another slot to fit you into.
- 6
Comments to the editors
Short and factual: series position, recent awards or trade reviews, review count, and what the deal is for. A template is at the end of this guide.
What a Featured Deal costs
BookBub prices each slot by category and deal price, because a bigger list sells more copies. These are the US prices from BookBub's partner pricing page in October 2026. Paid deals above $2 cost more again.
| Category | Subscribers | Free | $0.99 | $1 to $2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thrillers | 1,910,000+ | $762 | $948 | $1,767 |
| Psychological Thrillers | 1,740,000+ | $740 | $925 | $1,708 |
| Historical Fiction | 1,670,000+ | $897 | $1,109 | $2,100 |
| Cozy Mysteries | 1,490,000+ | $671 | $832 | $1,557 |
| Biographies and Memoirs | 1,410,000+ | $708 | $962 | $1,761 |
| Contemporary Romance | 1,250,000+ | $620 | $765 | $1,450 |
| Fantasy | 1,080,000+ | $467 | $586 | $1,073 |
| Historical Romance | 990,000+ | $570 | $700 | $1,340 |
| Science Fiction | 980,000+ | $496 | $616 | $1,146 |
| Christian Fiction | 370,000+ | $309 | $379 | $728 |
International-only deals for readers in the UK, Canada and Australia cost less than the US list, and are a sensible first test for a book that keeps getting turned down in the US.
How editors choose
Once a book clears the requirements, BookBub's own guidance names the factors that tip it. In rough order of how often they decide the outcome:

Price
Deeper discounts get more clicks, and editors know it.
Reviews
There is no minimum, but more authentic, positive reviews help, and editors read them to see what readers loved and what they complained about. Our guide to getting Amazon reviews without breaking the rules covers the slow, safe way to build them.
Cover
It has to look like a bestseller in that exact category today. Editors compare it to what is trending.
Description
Clear, error-free, with a hook and any real accolades. A sloppy blurb reads as a sloppy book.
Wide availability
A book discounted at Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble, Google Play and Kobo is usable by every subscriber. Amazon-only is allowed but weaker.
Recognition
Trade reviews, awards and blurbs count only if a reader would recognize the name.
The pattern behind most acceptances: a series starter at free or $0.99, a few hundred reviews, a genre-perfect cover, every retailer, all regions, flexible dates. Each item is something you control except the review count, which is why that is the one to start on months ahead.
Will it pay back?
Do this before you submit, not after you are accepted. Pick a category and a price, then enter your own estimates. The calculator only does the arithmetic; the inputs are your call.
- Featured Deal cost
- -$586
- Royalties from the deal itself
- $350
- Royalties from book 2
- $873
- Net after the deal fee
- $637
Worked example: a fantasy series starter at $0.99 costs $586. At Amazon's 35% royalty on $0.99 you earn about $0.35 a copy, so the deal alone needs roughly 1,700 sales just to break even. Add book 2 at $4.99 and a 70% royalty, about $3.49 a sale. If a quarter of 1,000 deal buyers go on to buy it, that is 250 sales and about $872, which is what turns the same promotion profitable. A standalone book rarely has that second engine.
Apply it to your book
A Featured Deal pays best when book 2 is waiting. Plan the series, write it in your voice, and publish it with a cover that fits the genre.
Running the deal
Acceptance is only half the result. The other half is how well you catch the traffic.

Lower the price everywhere a day before the deal date so every link works when the email lands. Book a few smaller promotions for the following days so the rank you gain on day one is held rather than lost. Make sure book 2's page is ready to sell: a clean description, the right price and a link from the back of book 1 to the next book.
If your book is in KDP Select, a Kindle Countdown Deal handles the timed price drop for you on Amazon US and UK while keeping the 70% royalty, though it only covers Amazon. Raise the price once the push is over, and watch the reviews that arrive over the following weeks. Ask for them gently in the back matter rather than by email blast.
BookBub Ads: the self-serve route
BookBub Ads is a separate product. Nobody approves your book, there is no discount requirement, and you can promote a full-price book. Your ad appears in BookBub's daily emails and on its site.
You bid by cost per thousand impressions or by cost per click, and you target readers who follow comparable authors, who chose particular categories, or both. Most authors start with small daily budgets, one comparable author per ad, and a few cover or headline variants, then keep the combinations that earn clicks.
The two products work well together. Ads targeting readers of your comparable authors during a Featured Deal week add to the spike, and ads on a full-price book 2 make sense once the deal has filled the top of the funnel. Amazon's own ad platform works on different logic; our beginner's guide to Amazon Ads covers it.
If you are rejected
Most submissions are. A rejection usually means a crowded calendar or a fixable gap, not a verdict on the book.
01
Resubmit smarter
Wait four weeks, or resubmit sooner at a lower price. Open up dates, regions and retailers, and refresh the cover or blurb if either is the weak link.
02
Try an international-only deal
Smaller lists, lower prices and often an easier yes. It builds a track record on the same book.
03
Stack smaller promo sites
Freebooksy or Bargain Booksy from Written Word Media, Fussy Librarian, Ereader News Today, Robin Reads and BookSends. Each costs a fraction of a Featured Deal. Book two to four within a couple of days so the traffic arrives as one spike.
04
Build the review base
Early reader programs widen the base that editors look at. See our guides to NetGalley for authors and the Amazon Vine program.
05
Grow your own list
A newsletter is the one promo channel you never have to apply for. An author page with a reader signup and launch broadcasts turns every deal into subscribers for the next one.
06
Promote the audiobook on Chirp
Chirp is BookBub's audiobook store and runs its own deals. Audiobooks reach it through INaudio or Authors Republic; our guide to ACX alternatives explains both.
Mistakes that waste a Featured Deal
- Featuring a standalone at $0.99 and expecting the deal to pay for itself.
- Discounting only on Amazon after submitting for every retailer.
- Running a better price in the 30 days before, which disqualifies the book.
- Leaving book 2 unfinished, mispriced or without a link from the back of book 1.
- Resubmitting the same package every four weeks without changing price, dates, cover or blurb.
- Using a cover that looks like your taste rather than your category's bestsellers.
The AI-assisted shortcut
Most of what decides a submission is packaging, and packaging is where an afternoon with the right tools helps.
Run your description through the free book blurb generator to get several versions with stronger hooks, then check it for Amazon search with blurb SEO. For the review base, the review request generator drafts ARC invitations and back-matter asks that stay within store rules, and the email sequence generator writes the launch emails for your list.
And the deal only pays if book 2 exists. That is where AIWriteBook itself comes in: plan a whole series with shared characters and a consistent story bible, write it chapter by chapter in your own voice, and design a genre-matched cover on the Metadata step. Our page for KDP publishers shows the full workflow.
Template: the comments field
Keep it under 80 words. Facts only, no pleading.
[Book Title] is book 1 of the [Series Name] [genre] series (3 books, all available). It has [number] reviews averaging [rating] on Amazon and is wide at Apple, Barnes and Noble, Google Play and Kobo. The deal price will apply in all four regions on every retailer listed. [Award or trade review, if any.] Dates are flexible.
The bottom line
A BookBub Featured Deal rewards preparation more than luck. Clear the hard requirements, submit a series starter at free or $0.99 on every retailer with flexible dates, and do the payback math with your own read-through before you pay. If the answer is no this month, stack smaller promos, keep building reviews and try again.
